Detroit Expediting

I am new to the whole expediting world and would like to become involved but I wanted to find out as much as I could before I actually am in over my head. Back in 1995 I had the opportunity to make a few small expedited runs for a friends mother and fathers company and that is all it took to get me interested. However I listened to everyone elses plans for my future and followed them. College, get a good job, get married and start a family. I have done all of those, except the family starting, and the only one out of the whole bunch that I an happy about is my marriage. I love my wife and she supports me in my decision to try expediting but I don't really know what expediting is ALL about.

I am living in the Detroit area and am looking for places that I can expedite for but I am the fng and am very wet behind the ears. If anyone could help with information on finding 'runs' or about the expediting world in whole I would love to hear all about it.

Thanks for your time and consideration.

after a few months of preparing I can now say.....It works. Their are companies out there who will pay for the service we provide.

On Monday at 2PM I finally got it all together and was ready to open my doors and start accepting loads. I called a friend is the warehouse business to tell him my good news and that I was scared to death and on the spot he offered me a load of subway train parts going to NYC. At 5 AM the next morning I was on 86st making my first delivery. The best part is that when I got home I got to use my new quickbooks acounting program to send out a bill for $50 less than my monthly sprinter payment. I know all you money crunchers will say I have to deduct my expenses but.......not on the first one! As far as i'm concerned, I made $976 profit within 2 hours of starting! haha

Well you may say Ha Ha but those expenses are real and have to be paid for.Sounds to me that you have a Sprinter payment of $1026 per month. You should figure our your Costs Per Mile, take your fixed costs which go on no manner what and your operating costs, get a figure and never go below that. Good luck

As a result of the automotive industry, there are a lot of options for someone that wants to get into the expediting business. A word to the wise - there are not very many (if any) recruiters out there that will be completely truthful with you. It isn't that they all lie, but rather some of the details are left out. This is a real feast or famine industry.

Obviously all of the big companies and a hundred small companies are running trucks in this area. You can talk to drivers at the usual truck stops (S. nr. Monroe, Detroiter, Mound & I-696, Inkster & Ecorse Rd, and others). You may want to check out some of the smaller companies in the area, as all of them seem to have help wanted signs posted.

Just make sure that you have all of the facts if you decide to jump in. Just a few months ago, there were a lot of guys crying the blues on this web site, as business was slow and drivers were having a tough time making it. Right now it seems that things are pretty good.

Frequently the smartest thing to do is drive for someone else for a bit and go through the cycle before you go out and buy a truck.

Thanks for the input. All of it is so helpful. I will be speaking to drivers out there. This is all very exciting to me. However I am still a little scared. You really hang it all out there for this line of work. I get courage and confidence from these messages. You all don't know how much this helps. Or maybe you do.

Thanks again.

Take care out there.
