Awesome and awful can be interchangeable in that regard, as can other words, like terrible

Okay, sure.

There are high-church prayers that begin, "O great and terrible God..."
see Deut. 3:21--Thou shalt not be affrighted at them; for the Lord thy God is among you, a mighty God and terrible.

Ummmm....okay, I really didn't want to turn this into something it wasn't, I was merely stating that some Christians save the word Awesome for describing God and do not think they would appreciate you describing the word such as you did:
aw·ful
[aw-fuhl]
–adjective1.extremely bad; unpleasant; ugly: awful paintings; an awful job.

I happen to have my Bible(NIV) right here with me and thought I would let you know what Deut. 3:21 says:

Deuteronomy 3:21 NIV: Moses Forbidden to Cross the Jordan

At that time I commanded Joshua: "You have seen with your own eyes all that the LORD your God has done to these two kings. The LORD will do the same to all the kingdoms over there where you are going.

If you want to talk about a vengeful God I'll share one of my favorite passages, plus I am a big Jules fan even if he did take some liberties with the verse.

Ezekiel 25:17 (NIV):
I will carry out great vengeance on them and punish them in in my wrath. Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I take vengeance on them.

Now that is an Awesome God!

The word Awesome in the Bible means: amazing, characterized by reverential fear. Throughout the Bible it is used to describe God. I am not saying you shouldn't use the wordawesome I am mereley pointing out that some may argue or take offense to that word being used other than describing God. Think of it like, when people say you should not use the Lords name in vain. Some people are offende when other do that.

My point was that the word awesome being turned into a word that means the total opposite, bad, unpleasant, ugly, some might not agree.

That's all.

Thats if what I though, sort of. As to understanding English, we DON'T speak "English" in this country, we speak "Standard American English" or " 'Merican" as I like to call it. Shoot they don't even speak "English" in many parts of England!! Try living in Yorkshire. By the way, English has NOTHING to do with the bible which was NOT written in English. As to translations, there are almost as many of them as there are words in the Bible.

You can agree or disagree but the word "awesome" can have many meanings. That has NO bearing on it's use in some parts of the bible.
