DEF or Diesel Exhaust Fluid

DEF usage is sure not going to add much to our cost of doing business. So far we have paid 2.60 a gallon for DEF after purchasing in bulk at the Pilot and Loves truck stops.

Our first fill up was 474.56 MPG
Second fill up was 529.59 MPG

As our fuel mileage goes up so will our DEF MPG. The engineers at Detroit Diesel told me that DEG Usage should be about 2% of our fuel mileage. We have a 23 gallon DEF tank and I am not often looking for DEF. When I do need to start looking I have found three web sites to be helpful:

Love's Fuel Price Search

Pilot Flying J - Diesel Exhaust Fluid (Bulk DEF)

Home - discover Diesel Exhaust Fluid

I have found this site very helpful in learning about DEF:

Deisel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Q and A

Two things I wonder about;

Will there be an option to the truck to have a larger tank for the DEF?

If you are compensated for fuel giving you a base price of ~$1.25, does the DEF cost impact your bottom line as much as people have claimed it will?

The numbers she posted calculate to 1/2 penny per mile and 10-11,000 miles per tank. I doubt they've asked for a fsc increase or need a larger tank.

Well some are asking for just that, the carrier paying for the DEF fluid.

AND the tank issue was about extending the range of the truck, which if I would have to have a DEF system on my truck, I would fill up three times to a fill up of fuel.

Linda,

I know it would only be a best guess given all the variables, but what would your best guess be for DEF consumption by an expediter straight truck over a month in which the truck drove say 12,000 miles?

Approximately how many gallons would be used?

Heck I was trying to figure out how I said it so wrong as I thought it was pretty simple math. I cannot imagine wanting a bigger tank as DEF weighs in at 9 lbs per gallon while diesel weigh in at approximately 7.05 per gallon. As time goes on and more places have bulk DEF tanks I see the tanks on trucks getting smaller.

DEF has nothing to do with fuel so it would not have a FSC. DEF is a stand alone product that is dispersed at or near the fuel pumps.

Even the new Sprinters have a DEF tank .... though mine does not .... but I know it is a small one.

Imagine in 1969 a conversation ...

"Driver go out in the shop and getcha some exhaust fluid."

"Kiss my butt, YOU must be the one taking the drugs around here! Trying to pull a silly trick on me!"

Why would they put a road tax on DEF? There is not a road tax on window washer fluid or radiator coolant.

Why would they (GOV) make radar detectors illegal, dont put anything passed our government. When Ohio raises their speed limit to 70,they realized the extra tax revenue from faster trucks loosing fuel mileage.

Steve DEF has nothing to with fuel and all to do about exhaust.

I agree the government can come up with some odd rules and I am sure they will find more ways to tax DEF as well as everything else in the future.

Why if it's illegal to go above 75 in most all states, Montana probably being the exception do cars and trucks go well above that speed? Why do speedometers even on economy cars read 110 to 120? I do remember most cars in the 80's only going to 85

In the 80's it was a government requirement that speedometers could not read over 85. Imagine this in a Vette. Remember the mandatory seat belt locks that would keep the car from starting if the seat belts were not fasten? Jerry Lee

my car reads up to 120 but I don't even think it would make it to 100. And honestly doesn't matter if it is a Vette or a Chevette, 85mph is breaking the law!!!
