Deer season beware - photo evidence

There was a segment on the news in which some Chicago TV station did a feature on a rural coyote hunter who was getting increased business in coyote removal. A camera crew went out into the suburbs with him to see how many he could scare up. He leaned against a tree and started doing coyote calls. In a couple minutes, the camera showed several come running. They also showed one getting real close to a guy cutting grass, unafraid of the lawnmower, and it was a huge, commercial one.
Coyotes in the boonies, fine. In cities and suburbs, aw hey-ell no! My dog is the most important mammal in town, and anything that threatens her must die.

LOL!! I take it you don't hunt much,if at all. You don't write like it.

Nothing like a good, "squealing rabbit" to bring in a coyote! Several came running? Coyotes are solitary hunters and do not often, if ever, pack hunt. Sound like a bit of "selective editing" to me. Even more so since it only took a "couple of minutes" for a "pack" to suddenly appear. Ain't gonna happen.

coyotes frequently hunt in packs. Read it on the DNR website a couple hours ago. But the camera kind of, well, not panned, but showed each approach from a different vector, Victor.

Too be we do have "open season" on humans, they are called war. Evil nasty things. They also mess up wildlife habitat. Nothing good there.

Very true! I was being sarcastic though, when I lived in Washington state though people were always saying that this animal or that animal was nothing but a nuisance and needed to be taken care of...problem is when you move to rural area the truth is you invaded their territory. People would move to mountain lion habitat there then freak out when their beloved poodle Fluffy became food! I enjoy hunting and fishing, and it does keep overpopulation of animals in check but some people are now so urbanized they don't understand that everywhere once was untamed, wilderness and animals believe it's their home as much as us. Plus sometimes it's forgotten that animals serve a purpose, and it's not just food! Though venison is quite yummy! :)

I have NEVER, in over 50 years in the field, seen coyotes hunt in packs. See them all the time. See them kill on a regular basis and I have NEVER seen more than two during their hunt. They are primarily solitary hunters. Sometimes in loose pairs as indicated in one of the articles xggi posted. Wolves are pack hunters.

I've never seen a pack of wolves in the wild only singles a few times does that mean anything?

Nope, it means you likely were not watching them hunt. Depends on time of day, time of year, etc. Wolves tend to be "pack" hunters, coyotes are not. How much time have you spent in areas with wolves? Have you "observed" them in their natural habitat or just seen them along the side of the road? How much time have you spent in "coyote" country? Observing them hunt?

I don't get to see wolves very often. They are rare in Michigan's lower, but now common in the UP. Coyotes, on the other hand are "thick" in the LP. They are also "thick" in PA where I also lived and hunted. I have observed them for HUNDREDS of hours over my life time. I have NEVER seen more than two when they were hunting and seldom more than one. I see them in loose packs when the are just hanging out at the pool.

No what it means is we cannot simply go by our own observations. Yes I grew up hunting from the time I could follow my dad through the woods with my trusty bb gun in hand just like dad with his real guns and of course wearing the same style boots as him, good days those were and proud I was.

No, I don't ONLY go on my own observations, I do study extensively. I know MANY coyote hunters and trappers. I know MANY wildlife biologists. I even watch discovery once in a while, for what good that is, they tend to be "agenda" driven any more. In just ONE deer season, I spent 49 FULL, before dawn to after dark, days in the field and many more "partial days". I see coyotes EVERYWHERE I hunt. Before I started this business it was the norm for me to hunt/fish AT LEAST part of more than 200 days a year. I have a bit of field experience.

ANY WHO. We can argue more this weekend. I gotta head out for my pick up.

Come over to my place and trap them. No one traps or hunts them around where I live. Good prime pelts in Jan and Feb.

I wonder if A Monger can talk the coyotes around his place into buying and using Acme products. That seems to control coyotes well enough on TV.

In real life-- we're stuck as long as there's sufficient food around to keep coyotes around. Between deer, rodents and our dogs and cats, I don't see a shortage of food any time soon.

For the most part at least around Mich a good hunter or trapper could be found at almost any bait shop where coffee is served. If you have a problem with critters and providing you are not a city dweller not much need to hire a critter getter.
Well with the expection of Bees/Wasps and Snakes. Snakes & Bees in a building I am calling for help.:D

It has been my experience over the past year or two that deer are everywhere! Day, night, winter, spring, summer, autumn, rut, harvest, hunting season, it makes no difference. I believe the deer population is up all over the country.

Makes for good eatin during SHTF.
