 Yesterday I went to lunch. My total was $6.77. I gave the girl $12. The register showed $0.23 change. She looked totally lost. She stood there for many seconds looking into the drawer. She turned to a young guy, possibly an assistant manager. She explained the problem and he got out his Blackberry and started punching away. I said the change is $5.23. I told her she probably put $7 in not $12. I told her $12 minus $7 is $5 so I get that plus the 23 cents the machine says. Then I told them they should go back and sue their school since anyone should be able to do that in their head in 3 seconds if the school did their job properly. It's no wonder we have so many who'll fall for all the garbage the media spews when they are no better educated than that. :(

I failed to mention that in the minute or so while I got the correct change from the girl the asst mgr guy still had not punched out the correct answer on his fancy phone.

Leo..that is so true....ever been in a J when the computers go down....they can't order or make your bill up....Never mind make change....they can't do the math....BASIC math that is...They don't know the basics....I sat down with my kids and used the old flash cards till they knew 6x7 without thinking about it... Now they are grown up they even come back and Thanked me ...as they have jobs that require math skills....They know how to make change for 7.99 out of a 10 spot. Without the comp or calculator.

What are these schools doing?????

What the schools are doing is raising my taxes so they can bring technology into the schools. Granted, they need to stay current in computer technology to advance in the business world, but with the computer comes the obsolesence of pencil and paper math, slide rule math and hand held calculator math. I think this all leads to ADD (no pun intended) and the need to sedate the kids on ridelin. Why is it that a child can maintain his attention for uninterrupted hours on the internet, but has Attention Deficit Disorder when in a school setting?

How could we put so much pressure on todays youth. Trying to learn all those basic skills and thinking for themselves will require years of therapy just to recover from the trauma.

Leo, I'm confused. Why did you give her $12.00 for a $6.77 bill? Was a 12 dollar bill the smallest note you had? Or was it two 6er's.

Probably wanted to use a couple ones and get a 5 spot back instead of having additional ones in his wallet???

I wonder if the same reliance upon electronic assistance isn't going to be trouble for those who don't learn to read a map, because they have a GPS unit.....

Absolutely Cheri, i've already experienced that, a few times with some. It's not if, just simply when.

I can see it now... a truck totals three cars to get over two lanes to exit.

"Sorry officer. My gps screen was blank, and came on just before the exit. I didn't know it was going to tell me to get off there."

We stopped at a Sonic Drive In and it was refreshing to see the young carhops be able to make change without the use of a computer. :)
