I once wanted to give an employee a merit raise My plant manager advise me Against that. Once you give someone something it's hard to take it back as in the raise so I issued the person a one time cash bonus

Poor management accelerated some of their problems but unsustainable wages and pensions drove them into the ground. Competent management could have only done so much with a out of control balance sheet.

The steel industry was a combination of union and global problems. Most in the steel industry took a huge hit when China started dumping cheap imported steel on the market.
