About four hours ago, the Senate approved repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell". I'm a bit surprised that none of our resident conservatives have started predicting the end of civilization, as we know it. Even Richard Burr(R-NC) voted for repeal, saying that it was inevitable.

Was it a straight up repeal or did they do it RIGHT and pass a new bill to insure the safety off all involved? Any bets they just messed this up?

I believe that what was accomplished today was to send it to Obama, for his signature, which will set into motion the military's implementation of the new policy.

Maybe then we can renlist all of the interpreters, bomb squad members & fighter pilots that have been kicked out of the various branches.

This is not a policy that will put into action overnight.

It will be interesting. and VERY costly. New barracks, regs etc. It will take time. This will happen but it will NOT be easy.

I wonder just how much all those new shower facilities are going to cost, or are ALL barracks going to become unisex? I can hear the women's groups on that one! Men are going to be FORCED to shower with gay men, why can't women shower in the men's? This is NOT going to be as easy as Obama THINKS it will be. Assuming Obama thinks.

I would certainly be proud to say " I joined the Army where they send illegal aliens and girly men."

The economy is in the sh*tter, the country is being invaded and we are fighting a war on two fronts and there is enough work for Congress to work 24/7 but our senate has decided to end the limitations that protected those who choose to be gay in the military.

NOW it will get interesting.

This isn't going to invoke changes in quarters, showers or mess halls. What will likely happen will be a reinforced message that your beliefs and feelings no longer have any bearing on your job and you as a solider will have to watch what you say or do.

The real issue isn't even any so called gay rights issue, but rather applying the laws that were established long before any gay protection laws were passed, mainly the age discrimination laws that prevent anyone from joining the military and forcefully retire those who can still serve. If we are to beleive that these rights are to be applied equally, then it either has to be that age discrimination is taken more seriously than any gay rights or there is no reason to even worry about gay rights because no matter how you look at it, being gay is a choice, growing old will never be a choice.

The one thing that I just thought about is how would the enemy, that is the Muslims who hate American will treat a gay soldier if they are captured by a terrorist. You know some of them have a really deep seated hatred for that lifestyle, as much as they do for our country.

So now women can't complain about men in their showers? No Greg, it is NOT as simple as you might think. Being in the military does NOT require a total giving up of everything. They are still human. Without the PROPER policies, in place PRIOR to implimintation, there WILL be problems.

I have little doubt that I served with gay men. They kept that to themselves. They will serve without problems as long as there is NO FORCED showers etc. Just as women has separate showers for the SAME REASON.

It seems we have a long way to go before ALL of America is dragged, kicking & screaming, into the 21st century.

BTW, if gay/lesbian folks choose to be that way, how old were you when you were forced to choose to be staright? You were'nt forced; you were born that way.

Uhh .... aren't they already being forced to do that ?

Not the same. Under the current policy they must keep their sexuality to themselves. That will NOT be the same when they are in the open.

Don't misunderstand, I am NOT opposed to gay men serving openly. I AM opposed to this repeal without a policy already in place. Most of the current serving members I have spoken with feel that way as well.

No one has yet to explain why women get separate showers so they don't have to shower with men, what is the difference?
