Let's take the company out of the equation.
If you add authority, insurance, and all the other nitty-gritties needed to be "legal" on the highway -- what might that total up to?
Well, I really cannot say, simply because I have never had my own authority. However, simply because a person operates on their own authority does not necessarily mean they will do any better or worse since it all depends on you actually landing your own accounts.
Naturally, I assume the pay per run would be much better, but getting good runs on your own would be a real trick - especially for someone starting out with no experience or contacts.
a "PS" to this post: Nothing personal, but at $12.00 "before" taxes, unless you simply want to travel and see the country, that's pretty sad. Our district school bus drivers start at $14.00+ an hour. Add to that, if full-time, you get benefits as well!
I agree with you, $12.00 per hour is pitiful but the figures don't lie and there are plenty of drivers out there not even making this amount. It would seem like the drivers themselves should be well aware of their own "$ per hour figure", but I would be willing to bet they do not. Perhaps they purposely do not want to know?
Consider if your truck payments are higher than your $1070k per month and your MPGs are below 9 MPGs.
More often than not, DH miles exceed 50% and paid miles are often less than advertised.
Paid miles are also often less than the actual miles it takes to comlete the run.
We also did not include the fuel consumption wasted idling for hundreds of hours while waiting to be dispatched or during warm-ups.
What about the infamous unforseen repair bill? $800 for a set of steer tires or $1500 for some other repair two or three times a year?
Also consider the numerous "losing" loads that you will get - - all the items posted drastically affect the bottom line at the end of the year.
I realize my post does is showing some of the "negatives" - but at least its real.
