Let's say someone has a 1 ton GMC Cube Van with the 16 foot box. Approx how much weight can they carry?

Penske says GMC Cube Van with the 16 foot box weight is 6,756 lbs for a 2005 model and 6,500 lbs for a 2004 model. 3000 lbs if you pack light.

So if you equip build a little sleeper in there you won't be able to haul anymore than a regular cargo van? Are just curious if one could make more money with a cube van over a regular cargo van.

My thinking is that a cube van would be a attractive alternative to the Sprinter because of lower investment and better access to parts and service. I believe though from a weight capacity point of view that it will be comparable to a cargo van. Also, having a large dedicated sleeper would be a definite plus especially if running a team.

MSinger has an old Penske 1 ton GMC. Might ask him how much he actually hauls in the real world. I think he said that most of his freight was fairly light, but needed the volume. His is one of those 10,000 GVW models you see for rental.

I am actually running a Ford E450 w/ 14ft box. Extra springs over the one ton. GVWR is 14,050. I carry a pallet jack as well. I used to clear about 6200 on the scales but have had to cut back to about 5800. That is due to me having the dock bumper cut off and a Maxon tuck-away gate installed.

Yes, I do have to log. Even though I would generally be considered short haul because I am normally back in terminal by the end of the day, AND alot of what I do might fall under the 150 mile rule for intrastate carriage (which exempts me from HOS regs) I do have to log. It's really not a big deal.

I've frequently thought about a 450 chassis with a 17' Aerocell body. You can get them up to a 14.5k gvw. There's 16'1" of actual floor area. I don't remember the inside width but it is significantly more than a van or Sprinter. I believe you could have a refrigerator, cabinets, etc. along one side wall and still have plenty of room for a row of skids plus some narrow shelves/storage along the other wall if you didn't mind the freight being off center by 5-10%. Even nicely equipped for comfort while on the road it should easily carry 5k of freight so other than not being dock high it's a full C unit capability weight wise.

Well, the Supreme box on my cube is 90" wide inside, 85 through the door. Mine is about 40" deck height. Aviator on here had one that was 16 feet, I believe. he blocked off the first 5 feet for living and enough room for 4 skids left. Small bunk, fridge, a microwave and you're set.

Side note: If you're going to do something like this, you'd better have something better than "B" pay for it. Because of air drag, my V10 gets about 9-10 on the highway.

This is what I am thinking of doing. I am gonna buy a van with a 10 ft box on it. The U-Haul type, with single tires in the back. I can haul decent amount of weight, and then use the truck for whatever I need to when I am at home. Another thing I was thinking about doing was, I am going to get a "Toad" camper and pull it behind it. They only weigh 1,600 lbs or less and are 16 ft or less.. I will get mine unfinished, so it will be really light. Then when I am done for the night, or sitting at a truck stop for a few days, I will have a nice place to stay, shower, crapper, ac/heat, etc. You can even "camp out" at Wal Marts now! What are your thoughts on my idea?? I figure just the money I save on showers, will help cover cost of gas. It only takes a few mins to unhitch the camper, get loaded, and attach it again. Your thoughts???

When you tow .. you become a combination vehicle, new rules, new insurance requirements, new cdl liscense ..

Lots of things to consider there ... carrier may not allow such a configuration also
