Canada Crossing with pets...

Anyone ever have an issue crossing the border either way with a pet. We have a small dog (Chihuahua / Toy fox terrier mix named Paco) and have heard that a pet could be quarantined for no reason (even if you had all shot records) at the border for a minimum of like 7 weeks at a cost of $100 per day. (Price is so high so you would just opt to put the animal down.) I was under the impression that if you had all the shot records including Rabies, there should be no problem. Just wonderin..........

years ago, we traveled with a small dog in our van. One a crossing into Canada at Sarnia, a Canadian Customs agent chewed us out for not having a shot record paper for the dog, we had a rabies tag, but no certificate. We were allowed into Canada but immediately upon returning home, we got certificate from our vet and never again had a problem, either into or out of the USA

We also cross often with our Cocker Spaniel One hint we were told was to have to rabies certificate have a specific marking that your dog has. Most Cocker Spaniels have about the same coat color, ours has white on her muzzle and on her chest and this reflected on the papers. We have never had to show these papers or even been questioned about Molly but if we ever are we are prepared.

We had our Yorkie with us for awhile and we went across the border with him. Never
had a problem but I did have shot records from the vet with me.

Things at the Border are NEVER done for "no reason".
The importation of pets is controlled by Agriculture Canada, and later this weekend, if you wish, I will find and post the regulations. The last time I posted the actual regs someone complained it was too complicated and unnecessary to post.
Basically you must have a current rabies vacination certificate signed by a licensed vetrinarian. Simple.

We always hand the shot record along with our passports and paperwork to the officer. Have never had any trouble.
