OVM, it was because a lot of the drivers could not follow instructions and didn't follow up on things the right way. A lot of shipments to St. Thomas was late was one reason I was told, Sterling was getting tired of the shipments sitting in Port Huron for 6 and 7 hours because the driver faxed the wrong stuff in.

My last shipment to Canada with FedEx, I didn't know about the policy change and they got mad at me because I would not go and fax the paper work to them. No one said a word to me during the departure call when I could have and they even asked for the PARS number. When they demanded me find a fax machine, I asked them if they want to come here and help me find one, I am sitting off of Bagley near the bridge and don't speak Spanish enough to ask who has a fax machine.

Don't know about panther, but I do know that I have yet to have a automotive part shipment that was moving into or out of Canada that didn't have paper work that showed country of origin or values on it. Will Canada allow you in still without it being properly processed so you can actually go to the processing center and then to the broker to straighten it out. I find if I am standing in the brokers office, they move a bit faster.

Livingston is a joke.....not really, it's not funny at all how many drivers they mess up!! I don't know how they stay in business like this...No use waste your money on faxing might as well manually clear load..it's quicker!!

Does your hubby know that Petro TS's they fax FREE to a 1-800 number???? Or toll free number

And in Canada ,5th Wheel will do the same....

I will hazzard a guess of what has happened.
The driver submitted the packing lists not the invoices to try and clear the load.
The "Country of Origin" is missing from the paperwork; it is rarely shown on the packing lists but almost always shown on the invoice along with the value.
The solution is to get the invoices faxed to the Customs Broker's office.
What is the destination of this load?
If it is going to the GTA; the driver could go forward In Bond providing he is running for a Canada Customs Bonded Carrier. He still couldn't deliver the load until it is cleared but he could wait in comfort at a truck stop till Monday.

I have had a hard time following this thread.

A Customs Broker cannot make corrections to an invoice; those must come from an authorized person at the Exporter or Importer.

Collingwood?
You are still clearing that in Windsor (if that is where you are crossing) I would imagine; the smaller Inland Suffererance Warehouses are being closed for lack of business.

Too many American drivers have problems with what should be a simple matter. The Carrier's dispatch should know the basics to assist their drivers.

The basics are:
Who is the Customs Broker?
Where is the load to cross?
Who will fax the Customs papers to the broker?

If the driver is responsible for that task........the papers must show:
Importer Company Name
Exporter Company Name
Description of the goods
Value of the goods
Country of Origin of the goods.

If you check and all those elements are shown the papers will "likely" be correct.
There are still many technical reasons for invoices to be incorrect and PARS not accepted.

The Customs Broker is responsible only to the IMPORTER of the goods. We will work with the Carrier and driver as obviously if they are being held then the Importer's goods will not be delivered when required.

Disclaimer: I do not work for Livingston.

been stuck at the border on the weekend a few times, if paperwork shows livingston its a crap shoot.weekend crew at panther will be no help on the weekend...usually i run into the broker problem when the load was a swap....(people cant or wont go into canada)...monday morning the (ahem) smarter crew comes in and figures it out...after waiting all weekend...sure does tests ones reserves...

I thought most people called BEFORE they went anywhere close to the border. I always have made sure it was clear before I got there, and never have had any problems. I also make sure I have all the correct paperwork before I leave the shipper, and make sure I double check all the paperwork against the manual to make sure I've filled every spot out correctly before faxing it in.

I did have a problem twice when doing a swap where someone else was taking it into Canada for me. Once I sent all the paperwork in, only to find out when the swap had already taken place they had given me the wrong broker info.

The second time I felt really bad for the guy. I picked up a load in Kentucky. They said they weren't sure where it would be swapped so I just kept driving. The whole way to Detroit I asked for the broker and driver info....no response and I asked like 6 times. Then I got to a truck stop in Detroit because they said they still didn't know who the driver I'd be swapping with was. I took a nap (it was after midnight) and the QC beeped saying the other driver was waiting for an hour for me. I wrote back telling them they'd never even sent me where I was swapping at, the drivers info...nothing! He was pretty upset, and to make matters worse, there was a serious language barrier so he didn't understand why I didn't fax the paperwork and couldn't get help from the nightcrew hardly.

It can be quite a process if you get the wrong info. I just never go until I call though. At least I'd be at a truck stop if I had to wait on the load to be cleared.

The free faxing went away since the T/A buyout. There are a few that haven't changed yet, but most now charge.

yes you have to confirm, confirm,confirm.....never take anything for granted...make sure all 6 pages got there....before you even approach the border...never approach the border without a green light...after you get burned a couple times if you don't learn to take your time and get into a system of checking and confirming well..............with experience you'll estabish a routine, it gets easier...

Ahem....NEVER...NOT EVER your husband should NOT have left the dock with that load....There are 3...THREE things that MUST be on all paperwork...COUNTRY OF ORIGIN....CURRENCY AND THE DOLLAR AMOUNT.

True, true, true!! Also, addresses of shipper and consignee, weight and packaging(# of skids), and description of the freight. This is basic stuff. The driver ABSOLUTELY should read the invoice to make sure the basic info is there. Sorry Alborada, but your Hubby shouldn't have let this happen.

That was my point Star....the driver has the ultimate responsibilty...its his truck, his load
I know some shippers try and shove a couple extra skids on at the last moment, and they don't do the adjustment on the paperwork But the driver should see this....And INSIST the shipper do his/her job.
