Courier Work?

Can anyone tell me anyone tell me more on what exactly the type of work is ?

Can you actually make some money at the job?

Working a notice now with my current fleet owner. I would love to find something home everyday like a courier. I also wouldnt mind getting a sprinter and getting back to work out there on the big road.

Thanks for any info.

In a lot of cases what Paul said was true. There's a few cases where you can do quite well though. Generally speaking you want a route & not the on call stuff. Obviously you'll want to run numbers on the route they offer. Miles/pay/etc.

The good news is for most courier jobs you won't need a sprinter. You can use your car for most of that work. If you get w/ the right courier company you can make about the same as an expediter.

When I started w/ this one company I was doing ok for awhile. I was making $6-700 week. This was before the first time fuel shot up a few years ago. They covered some of the increase, but not all, so the drivers took a hit when fuel went up.

It went along well until they started adding stops to the route w/out increasing pay, expecting an 85 mile round trip for $14 (meaning $2 profit) & things of that nature. Another driver bought a new car that got around 50MPG & they lowered his pay for the route because he now didn't use as much fuel for it. Uggh

A real good sign that they're boning ya is they won't want ya talking to other drivers about what you're making.

Still, there are good courier jobs. There are also some ones that'll make ya wish you'd never left what ya were doing before. If ya can find a good one you're good to go.

Good luck to ya.

Yea, what Danny said, did the courier thing in 2006, low pay ,to many stops at 5 bucks a stop and the paperwork is work of art or fubar most of the time, dont do it unless things have changed.

In the 90's I started driving for a courier company, then became a dispatcher and finally ops mgr. We had about 60 drivers all independents of course. Some guys made 300 a week some guys made 700. It was a lot like expediting in the respect of having good and bad weeks. We only had a few routes mostly on demand. We also dabbled in expedite but really more of a hotshot, run one way and deadhead home. We paid a percentage depending if it was car, pickup or van and actually showed on the drivers settlement the exact charge to the customer. Just like expediting find some drivers working for the company and talk with them. You will get the negative guys and the honest ones so listen with a grain of salt.

The way you say it "the negative guys & the honest ones" makes it like if ya don't say great things are you're not honest. I started out as a positive guy. I even came on this site & said good things about the place.

When the fuel shot up I didn't expect the company to eat the whole thing. I was fine w/ taking some of the hit. I came to work in blizzards, I helped cover other people's routes if they were late. One time I ran over something & got 2 flat tires. I changed 1 & with the other just kept filling it w/ air at gas stations. I finished the route though & was only a little late.

Once they start taking advantage of people though, the positive attitude goes south. It would seem that if a stop is added to the route, the driver would get more money. That's just common sense. The company makes more. My route was 15 stops originally. At 16 & 17 I kept it. At 18 I said not without more pay. They said they'd get someone else to do it then. That's when I quit/got fired.

I actually think that's a business plan of some of these companies. They'll get a route set up. Add to it, know drivers are going to quit & hire someone else who starts out not knowing what went on before. The person who replaced me had 18 stops on the route & was fine. Who knows? Maybe if I was the 2nd one on it I would have thought 18 stops was ok too. I kept in touch w/ some of the people I used to work for & last I had heard my former route now had 21 stops & the guy who replaced me left.

On the route I was on, there were 5 similar routes, so 6 total. In less than a year those 6 routes went through 17 drivers.

We do agree with the part of find some drivers who already work there & see what they say. I just think if drivers tell you specific things that happened, that's not being negative. That's simply telling ya what happened.

I did not mean that at all. Honest guys can indeed have negative things to say but they also give you both sides of the coin, By negative I meant those who are whiners and are not happy with anything they do. It had zero to do with any comments on this board. You will have the guys who say everything is great and leave out the bad part also.

Gotcha. No place is perfect, some less perfect than others. I misread what ya meant. My bad.

I do pretty decent with the Courier work. I've been with this one company for about 3 years. I provide a wide ranger of services for him. Van, truck & i'm able to store frieght for him on an over night/weekend basis if needed.

I also have weekly minimums in place for van & SUV work. Truck work & some of the heavier van work is billed by me on a job by job basis. My routes are daily & on call. It's not bad work at all. The hours are for the most part pretty resonable. I have 7am to 5pm availablitly 3 days a week. The other 2 dyas a week are mid afternoons to evenings.

I also have to part time drivers that work for me to cover the PM routes when i'm not available.

I do my fair share of hustling there are days when i'm running for FEDX during the evening & over night & than do my courier work in the day. It's not easy, but the money between the 2 can be very good.

I'm not what locations you are looking for but the big citys are where the most work is.

If you are doing 18 to 21 stops a day & it's all local work, like banks Hospitals/dr. offices & mail pick ups u should be making excellent money. I know that most of the time daily routes are discounted & bundled together & than you need to mix some on call work in. But just on 18 stops alone you should be pulling it $200 a day, 21 stops at least $220-$235.

I have an am route that I start at 9am in NYC, have a couple of stops in Brooklyn & is usually completed by 1pm on Staten Island, NY & i'm getting $126 for & it's about 12 stops. But it's pretty tight & if I mix in 2 to 4 on call's in I can easily punch that up to $200+ a day.

15 stops a day is not alot especially if you are done shortly after lunch.
