Copies of CDL

I am finding more and more shippers demanding a photocopy of the CDL before loading. I always refuse because of identity theft issues. I have already been down that road once to the tune of several million dollars of lost income etc, and no one would correct the problems even after verified proof in writing of their errors was served on them. I just wondered how other drivers are handling this given that our carrier won’t help the driver if there is a problem, and shippers are known to “lose the copies”.

Any enterprising crook with a computer can modify the copy and with a tail of woe can get the DMV to issue a new CDL to them with their new picture and address on it as long as the age and general description is about right. The next thing that happens is the real driver finds his CDL suspended for tickets some place he has never been, and he has to prove his innocence, loses his job etc, and all the while the state prosecutes with unlimited resources.

I think you get the picture. Just wondering what others thoughts are on this.

Driver license information is usually a public record so giving a photocopy to a customer is but one way that personal info is subject to exposure. One way to cut down on public personal info on a CDL is to ask the motor vevicle folks to substitute your SS number with a random number. MO and MA will do this for sure and perhaps all others.

Many states including TN, don't have it where it can be read. It will say "on file" right on the front of the license. A cop can run it through a scanner in there car to get your personal info. Much like a credit card. It has a magnet strip on the back.

you said our carrier will not help, i am *** uming you mean fedex. i would agree, we pick up freight for fedex at customers as well as at terminals. we have had this ask of us at some shippers but always at terminals. maybe this is because we are outside carriers, but we find alot of terminals that we go to [ yellow, roadway, central ] you get the just , ask for identification. company id or state id is the way to go and preferably the company.

I really don't give it much thought anymore.

Why?

With the license plate number from your truck, (if you own it) a laptop and an internet connection; your Social Security Number, home address, medical history, etc. is just a matter of a few well-placed keystrokes.

I could also use a police scanner to generate a broadcast of one's Social Security Number.

No More Secrets....
