My husband and I are new to expediting and have just about decided on ConWay Now. Can anyone give me any info, good or bad with Conway?

When I was with Conway their dispatch seemed quite disorganized.
I did appreciate their open door policy, which allowed you to stop in the office when you were in Ann Arbor and talk with the people.
The biggest disadvantage at Conway was that if you went west of Chicago with a load, you almost always had to return to chicago for your next load. They had very regular runs from O'Hare Airport to Rochester, MN, and they had almost no return freight.
As a husband/wife team, if you have the minimum six months experience requirement, I would recommend Landstar Express America. They work through agents rather than central dispatch, but when you get used to the agents the Landstar is a better deal than Conway.

We are located in Kansas City and were told that Conway has opened up in Tulsa and Dallas. Both of which would be great for us. None of the other expediters said they could get us much work south and west of here.

I really don't think I would hang my hat on what a company does or does not tell you about their freight area.
For example, we're with FedEx CC. They will tell you that most of their work is in the upper midwest, but we usually run all over the south and out across the Mississippi. Most times we go out will involve a trip to or thru Missouri and sometimes LA or TX or AR.
We've met couples based in TX, OK, and other states out your way and they all seem to be doing well. Usually after we've put in our time and decide to come home, we'll usually be sitting closer to your home than ours in VA.

Being based in Kansas City, you definitely would be better off with Landstar than Conway. Landstar has an agent in Omaha (with a branch operation in Kansas City) which was one of the best agents for me. They have quite a bit of business at good rates out of and into Kansas City with one particular customer. They also have lots of business at lower rates out of Shendoah, IA. The runs for both of these customers are long, and very good for a team unit. Good Luck.
My wife and i ran for them for all most two & 1/2 years .There are nice people over there,but thats where it ends.the first year we did good the 2nd year not so good this year forget it.I know every one says its this its that,but bottom line the don't look very hard for workj they wait for the phone to ring.they discount all there work.They say there repeat biz, i say so what!.they change ther pol. to suit them not you .they want company drivers at owner op expess.read the fine print and then read it again.and then look to some other company.wish i had something good to say but they almost put me under.and we were out 1-2 sometimes 3 months.thats why there aka con job now.good luck.

Hi, well there problem over there is they go places they can't get work back out of.they say they get work from dallas ,little rock,tulsa.Sure 1-2 loads a week, so your in laredo tx.they tell you dead head to dallas.Ok 428 miles then you get there your #3 or4 out that nite depending on what beauty you get on the phone that even knows who you are or where you are will tell you to go to little rock or w memphis.two more hot spots for freight.and from there you'll be of to chicago.you can look for your own but by the time they fax there insurence papers and every thing else theload's gone . WE paided for load boards and phone calls but never had a load booked.they started a back haul dept.a year 1/2 a go and some times they hook up .But they only had one person doing it .How much time can he spend on each truck.most of there loads are a 1.07 a mile they do alot of ford work with 15 min .windows, and will dock you money for being to late or to early .they can haVE FORD .most of the plant's are not to nice to deal with .I guess you can be like that when your #1 or so they say.If you turn down loads ,because you think maybe its to much dead head or what ever reason they will back list you .they say they don't ,but they do.they have some real problems over ther the people in the office a dealing with a lot of inner office b.s.if i where you i would look a panther or land star. where at landstar but i've heard good things about panther also. at least they stand behind ther word and contract.if your looking to get your feet wet and live up north where you can be home alittle more .and dont buy a dream truck to start with you can make a feww $$$ and get some exp.give em 6 12 months save some money if move you'll need it to start over again.Or maybe you will be one the few who can make it there.Whatever you do good luck .
