I hate to open another can of worms but here goes. I sold one of my vans and went to the hwy department to clear the tag and get some money back. I had been thinking about this discussion we seem to have on this very subject time and time again. I sat down with the manager and talked about GVW and Vans. This is what she said.
In S.Carolina it does not matter what the vehicle manufacturing tag says. Example. A 12,500 pound truck can be tagged at 12,500 pds. It can also be tagged for 10,000 pds or less if the operator puts a sticker on the side of the truck with the gross weight of the vehicle. It does not matter what the truck is built for if you tag less than that. So in S.Carolina if you have a truck that's a 12,500 pd GVW truck you can tag it as 9900 GVW and run it as such.
If you have a 12,500 GVW truck and you want to run it as a 9900 GVW vehicle you can do so if you can get a payload on board that will keep you under that. So if your truck is a 12,500 GVW truck and it weigh's 6000 pds empty and your tagged for 9900 GVW you can get 3900 pds payload on board and be legal
Hope that helped.
Hope that helps.
And when I say doesn't matter, I mean as long as you are less than.
