Considering new van, thoughts?

I hate to open another can of worms but here goes. I sold one of my vans and went to the hwy department to clear the tag and get some money back. I had been thinking about this discussion we seem to have on this very subject time and time again. I sat down with the manager and talked about GVW and Vans. This is what she said.

In S.Carolina it does not matter what the vehicle manufacturing tag says. Example. A 12,500 pound truck can be tagged at 12,500 pds. It can also be tagged for 10,000 pds or less if the operator puts a sticker on the side of the truck with the gross weight of the vehicle. It does not matter what the truck is built for if you tag less than that. So in S.Carolina if you have a truck that's a 12,500 pd GVW truck you can tag it as 9900 GVW and run it as such.

If you have a 12,500 GVW truck and you want to run it as a 9900 GVW vehicle you can do so if you can get a payload on board that will keep you under that. So if your truck is a 12,500 GVW truck and it weigh's 6000 pds empty and your tagged for 9900 GVW you can get 3900 pds payload on board and be legal

Hope that helped.:cool:

Hope that helps.
And when I say doesn't matter, I mean as long as you are less than.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions ..... ya talked me out of it

I finally got the curb weights of the units, body and chassis ...

Gmc Savanna cutaway, 10,000 GVW = 4950 pounds

Supreme Spartan body = 2450

Sleepr conversion, (est) = 1,000 pounds

Weight = 8400 pounds

That leaves 1600 pounds for freight, less than I can do now with the Sprinter.

If I decide I truly need increased weight capacity, I'll just upgrade to the Sprinter 3500, which is once more available in the 9900 pound configuration.

Was a good discussion!

Just a comment about regristration .... it may be true with your own authority about liscensing it for less. However, Landstar WILL go by the GVW on the door, no matter what you call it.

So it may be legal, but there's that pesky compliance department to contend with. (At Landstar anyway)

This is all well and good if you stay in SC. What Happens if you are stopped outside of SC? Does the door sticker are the registration apply? Jerry Lee

Don't know, depends on the states your operating in. To me when your stopped before they get a chance to look offer the registration and tell them I'm under 10k GVW. I don't know but it wouldn't hurt to ask. I would ask at the licensing agency not the scale house. They will tell you anything. The licensing agency will give you a copy of the regulations to carry with you. I have been running C/Van's the last few years but now stepping up to one like Chef has so I'm going to find out shortly. I guess it also depends on your carrier if they will go for it. Some will, some won't.
