Ed Housworth was, in my opinion, one of the "saints" of this industry. I have fond memories of driving for him & Ruby.
If you were near Lithonia, GA, you had a bed to sleep on, &, if you got there early enough, a good home cooked supper.
I never met Ed Housworth, (but I think I'd have liked him), but Ruby is who I drive for now, and I'll score some Brownie points by telling her that she's a 'legend', lol
Thought some of you 'old timers' might appreciate an update on Housworth (and that I never heard anyone call Ed "Mr Housworth" is what threw me, at first).
I had not heard of them before I began driving for Ruby last April, when I spent a month driving team in her truck, waiting for my own to be available. (The truck I posted on the Layover Lounge as 'mine', BTW, is actually Ruby's, and she laughed when I told her that - the 2 trucks are nearly identical. We agreed that we would both be laughing, should JoeBob, the driveby flirt, ever approach Ruby, thinking it's me - she'd give him quite an earful, lol )
Some things have changed since Ed's passing, of course. Ruby, who loved him very much, says she was out of her mind for a year or so with grief. She is the quintessential Southern lady, though, as tough as they come, and she put herself back together, and carried on. Most of the trucks had to be sold, there are only a handful left now. Ruby insists that she is 'just a driver', she never wanted to run Housworth Trucking. She doesn't want Ed's legacy to be lost either, and has handed over the reins to her son, who does the mechanical work, and his wife, who manages the office & payroll.
Freightchaser was absolutely spot on with his description of the hospitality extended to their drivers - I've often said that they practically adopted me, lol. (I've done my best to return the kindness, and have cooked dinner for everyone a couple times, and washed the dishes when I didn't - it is a family business in the best sense of that term)
So that is where things are now: I am still driving for Housworth, but if & when I move on, for whatever reason, I will stay in touch with Ruby, and her family. They are good people, and knowing them is another one of the benefits of being part of the community of EO - there are a lot of good folks out there, and I am grateful to have the pleasure of knowing so many of them.
