Calif. School Tells Elementary Students There Are More Than 2 Gender ‘Options’ | The Blaze

Who says elementary school is too early to start discussing gender issues?
This week, educators at Redwood Heights Elementary School in Oakland, California, are teaching young children all about the complicated world of “gender diversity.” The school has designed curriculum for every grade level. Amid the resulting controversy, Principal Sara Stone is defending the initiative, claiming that it is in line with what parents want:

“If we don’t have a safe, nurturing class environment, it’s going to be hard to learn. Really, the message behind this curriculum is there are different ways to be boys. There are different ways to be girls.”

A gender expert and trainer was brought in to speak to the children:

“[There's] a lot of variation in nature. Evolution comes up with some pretty funny ways for animals to reproduce. It turns out that there are not just two options.”

The trainer also told the children that this diversity applies to human beings as well. It is this rationale — that gender is pliable and that there are “more than two options” — that has some people frustrated. The San Francisco Chronicle has more on the curriculum:

A one-hour elementary school lesson on gender diversity featuring all-girl geckos and transgender clownfish…fourth- and fifth-grade students learned about the crazy world of gender within the animal kingdom with lessons about single-sex Hawaiian geckos, fish that switch genders and boy snakes that act “girly.”

Naturally, this has created an outrage. The idea that the school district would cover such complex issues with young children has led the conservative Pacific Justice Institute, among other groups, to get involved. According to The Washington Post, “Conservative legal defense organizations are providing counsel to parents who oppose the teaching at Redwood Heights by a gender spectrum trainer.”

What do you think about this? Is it appropriate for this age group or not?

Im assuming that the age group for Elementary school goes up to 11 years old - is this correct?

If this is the case - at what age do your schools teach students about the birds & the bee's ?

IMO, the only time schools should be talking birds and bees is when the students are dissecting them.

I have happened to meet many 'Christian' families in my lifetime, and it puzzled me at first why so many of them happened to also 'home school' their children. It has since become very apparent as to why this is so.

You would think that these issues (all the freakish gender issues that could possibly exist in the human race) encompass a really substantial percentage of the population... but from what I have read over time, that doesn't seem to be the case... so why are the schools introducing all of this stuff just to teach kids that these differences exist (they would find out in their own time anyway?), and to be compassionate about it? It's not like every 4th kid has one of these issues, is it??

And however much 'they' want to make these differences seem 'normal' to regular kids, and have that one afflicted kid feel 'normal' and like part of the group, it still just isn't going to happen.

LOL

The point I wanted to make was that these students would not have even been told about "the birds & bee's" for some while yet, so why would would anyone want to start confusing these very young ppl.

Unless the parents get to the point of crazy the school system will teach whatever they feel like. They pay no attention to what parents think. Parents are just there to provide revenue for their pension plans and to pay for them to spread their leftist agenda.

We need to withhold all funding and bring down the public indoctrination system we call public schools. Parents should have 100% control over what their kids learn.

That's terrible - anything that was even sightly controversial when my children were at school, a letter was sent home for the parents to sign that the child could or could not attend "the lesson ....the lecture ..... the trip"

The PTA is a strong body in our schools and the Governors of a school are made up of parents as well as a member of each main political party (who may well also be parents)

Over the years American's have either given up control of our school or had it taken from us. Most likely the first. It is not possible to take someones power without their consent.

If we had kids these days they would be home schooled. I kinda wish that we had done it back then.

We have elected school boards. Things are often not quite as bad in small towns and rural areas.

Teachers unions are another part of the problem.

California Elementary School Uses Lesbian Lizards and Clownfish to Teach Gender Diversity - International Business Times

By Toby Grant | May 26, 2011 4:31 PM HKT

In a society where 70 percent of those polled between 18-34 accept gay marriage, according to Gallup findings, should it be a surprise that an elementary school decided to educate children on gender diversity?

Earlier this week, 4th and 5th graders in Oakland, California-based Redwood Heights Elementary were taught lessons about gender differences as part of a larger effort to control bullying in school. The state of California requires schools to implement plans to address student safety in relation to conflicts that arise from gender issues.

Redwood Principal Sara Stone maintains that gender instruction is part of minimizing risk to students and promoting diversity.

Parents were given advanced notice of the lessons, and few parents kept their children home to avoid the program.

The instructional program included lesbian lizards, a transgender clownfish, and boy snakes who acts "girly" to teach gender diversity, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

"That's a lot of variation in nature. Evolution comes up with some pretty funny ways for animals to reproduce," lectured Joel Baum of Gender Spectrum.

Gender Spectrum is an organization that provides education, training and support to help create a gender sensitive and inclusive environment for all children and teens using a simple and straightforward approach.

Gender Spectrum's website states "We present an overview of how society currently defines gender and how these restrictive definitions can be detrimental to those who do not fit neatly into these categories. We then help you identify and remove the obstacles so all are free to be our authentic selves."

As word spread of Redwood Elementary's gender diversity program, conservative groups are reacting with outrage concerning the very content of the lessons, which teaches that "nature has more than two choices" when it comes to sexuality.

The Pacific Justice Institute, a conservative organization, stated that teaching children that there may be more than two genders "does not represent the values of the majority of families in Oakland,"

The gender training offered at Redwood Heights cost $1,500, and was funded by a grant from the California Teachers Association.

The is just no good reason for schools to be teaching gender identification.

There is a need to teach biology. Lifestyle is not a part of that.

Lifestyle, for the most part, is taught by example, by the parents. Kids learn by watching. It is a primary responsibility of parents to set a proper example based on their beliefs. What others think about others lifestyles in not relevant.

There might be a place, in the last year of so of high school for a sociology type class that explores some of this.

Well, the parents in this school districe could always take this approach:
(emphasis mine)
Parents keep child’s gender under wraps By Zachary Roth

When many couples have a baby, they send out an email to family and friends that fills them in on the key details: name, gender, birth weight, that sort of thing. (You know the drill: "Both Mom and little Ethan are doing great!") But the email sent recently by Kathy Witterick and David Stocker of Toronto, Canada to announce the birth of their baby, Storm, was missing one important piece of information. "We've decided not to share Storm's sex for now--a tribute to freedom and choice in place of limitation, a stand up to what the world could become in Storm's lifetime (a more progressive place? ...)," it said.
That's right. They're not saying whether Storm is a boy or a girl.
There's nothing ambiguous about the baby's genitals. But as Stocker puts it: "If you really want to get to know someone, you don't ask what's between their legs." So only the parents, their two other children (both boys), a close friend, and the two midwives who helped deliver the now 4-month-old baby know its gender. Even the grandparents have been left in the dark.
Stocker and Witterick say the decision gives Storm the freedom to choose who he or she wants to be. "What we noticed is that parents make so many choices for their children. It's obnoxious," adds Stocker, a teacher at an alternative school.
They say that kids receive messages from society that encourage them to fit into existing boxes, including with regard to gender. "We thought that if we delayed sharing that information, in this case hopefully, we might knock off a couple million of those messages by the time that Storm decides Storm would like to share," says Witterick.
"In fact, in not telling the gender of my precious baby, I am saying to the world, 'Please can you just let Storm discover for him/herself what s (he) wants to be?!." she wrote in an email.
How did Stocker and Witterick decide to keep Storm's gender under wraps? During Witterick's pregnancy, her son Jazz was having "intense" experiences with his own gender. "I was feeling like I needed some good parenting skills to support him through that," Witterick said.
Stocker came across a book from 1978, titled X: A Fabulous Child's Story by Lois Gould. X is raised as neither a boy or girl, and grows up to be a happy and well-adjusted child.
"It became so compelling it was almost like, How could we not?" Witterick said.
The couple's other two children, Jazz and Kio, haven't escaped their parents' unconventional approach to parenting. Though they're only 5 and 2, they're allowed to pick out their own clothes in the boys and girls sections of stores and decide whether to cut their hair or let it grow.
Both boys are "unschooled," a version of homeschooling, which promotes putting a child's curiosity at the center of his or her education.
As Witterick puts it, it's "not something that happens by rote from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays in a building with a group of same-age people, planned, implemented and assessed by someone else."
Because Jazz and Kio wear pink and have long hair, they're frequently assumed to be girls, according to Stocker. He said he and Witterick don't correct people--they leave it to the kids to do it if they want to.
But Stocker and Witterick's choices haven't always made life easy for their kids. Though Jazz likes dressing as a girl, he doesn't seem to want to be mistaken for one. He recently asked his mother to let the leaders of a nature center know that he's a boy. And he chose not to attend a conventional school because of the questions about his gender. Asked whether that upsets him, Jazz nodded.
As for his mother, she's not giving up the crusade against the tyranny of assigned gender roles. "Everyone keeps asking us, 'When will this end?'" she said. "And we always turn the question back. Yeah, when will this end? When will we live in a world where people can make choices to be whoever they are?"

Parents keep child’s gender under wraps - Yahoo! News
Behold, a course in how to screw up the lives of your children. The sad thing is that nothing can legally be done about nut cases like these two parents. They think they're raising their kids to be "enlightened"; in reality, they'll have created two maladjusted nut cases whose likelihood of suicide will probably be significantly higher than their peers, and their chances of becoming successful productive adults will be significantly less.

After seeing what Unschooling does to a kid, I would consider it in the hands of most parents a form of child abuse ... worst than forcing a kid to attend public schools.

IF you all want to protect the kids - fight to change the system. A lot of parents are doing that right now with little battles over the needs of their kids who have problems so if a large amount of parents get together and fights for actual legitimate changes like having a say in things, it would work.

Many parents are just too d*mn lazy to be involved with the education of their kids while on the other hand too many people have kneejerk reactions to these stories.

I myself, witnessing first hand the effects of home schooling, couldn't agree with you more greg. In my first hand account of this, it is because of the parents selfishness of not wanting to let go of their children and keeping them dependant on them. It is an unhealthy bond between the parent or parents and the children. This is someone on my wifes side of the family and we are all strong Christians and it is a concern to all of us. When this situation was finally brought up, the questioning was, is this abuse? My wifes family consists of 5 siblings and all were physically and or sexually abused by their father. So, to tell you that I was quite surprised when the issue of abuse came up, I was somewhat taken a back, since I have never been a victim of mental or physical abuse, it was hard for me to relate to, but they certainly were able to. Again, this is one account, but a personal one.

Not all, I want to emphasize that, not all kids who are home schooled are in situations like this, but I am speaking from a first hand experiance. In either case of home schooling or public schooling, it all comes down to how much the parents or parent is involved in the child's education.

Many parents are just too d*mn lazy to be involved with the education of their kids while on the other hand too many people have kneejerk reactions to these stories.

I couldn't agree more with you greg. Educate yourself on the issues when it comes to public schools, so kneejerk reactions aren't the norm, and get involved in your childs education.

I also know several who have home schooled their kids. They did so to insure that they actually learned something.

All have done well. Those who are old enough have completed college educations and have careers.

They were NOT taught "gender identification". They were NOT taught that the 2nd amendment was written to provide arms for the military (that is what one teacher TRIED to teach my son)

Several are now married and kids on the way.

None are in trouble, ever been arrested, do drugs etc.

Yep, it was SURE a BAD thing for them.

Education is not a Federal government function. Neither should it be a state government function. All aspects of education should be under the control of the parents. Period.

Un-schooling can be a problem, in fact, almost as bad as the Public Fool System. After the Public Fool System is abolished, perhaps we can turn our attention to lesser problems like un-schooling.

AMonger

Veteran Expediter
If it's going to be a while before society wises up and abolishes the Public Fool System, we need a stopgap measure to prevent further Californication (emphasis on the fornication) of our children.

One way is to change the PTA to the PA. You bring every new teacher to dinner that's really a come-to-Jesus meeting in the gymnasium, have it catered and all that. You arrange the seating so that no more than one teacher is at any one table, with the rest being parents--the pushy, overbearing ones that every teacher hates. During dinner, pleasant conversation ensues as the parents get to know the teacher at their table.

Then, after dinner, the head of the PA gets up and welcomes all the new teachers, and then gives then the my-way-or-the-highway bit. She tells them that they'll teach the curriculum the PA gives them, that there will be no f•••••ry, no earth day or global warming BS, and that the children will learn reading, writing, math, science, geography, and history. If they're doing well with those, we can consider adding gym, foreign languages, shop, and home ec.

"IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT, THERE'S THE DOOR, AND I HOPE YOU RENTED INSTEAD OF GETTING A MORTGAGE, BECAUSE YOU'LL NEVER TEACH IN THIS TOWN AGAIN, NOR WILL YOU EVEN GET HIRED AT WALMART."
