Does anyone have informaton on truck stops that are closed due to power outages or fuel shortages?
We are going to Long Island and want to top off before we go in.

Be safe and remember, you can lose your business on these loads. DO NOT TAKE A LOAD THAT FEMA/CDC may TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR TRUCK. These loads are dangerous beyond the norm and may not be worth the risk. Always assume the worst when on these loads.

Surely.

I took a load for Hurricane Gustav. It was a FEMA/CDC load. We went into Baton Rouge, LA. to LSU to set up a 'hospital shelter' for nursing home/hospital evacuees.

We went in FAR too late, 1.5 days prior to the storm and WAY too close to the coast for safety.

FMEA/CDC took control of our, and 16 other trucks, and would not release us to get out of the way of the storm. LSU demanded that we park in a spot right next to some buildings. We ASKED to leave, and were not allowed. We ASKED to park in an open field where nothing could hit us, we were not allowed.

The eye of the storm came within a few miles of our location. The roof blew off of the building we were required to park next to. It damaged all 17 trucks that were there. We lost our cargo box, and 3 months of work. The government and LSU did not take ANY responsibility what so ever. We lost just about every thing we had.

To top it off, many of the people who lived in the area were NOT very nice. They complained about the type and quality of the food served, army food was not good enough for them. One band of 'thugs' attacked an army convoy. Came at them, guns blazing. They only made one mistake. The bunch they attacked was fresh back from Iraq and was used to street mobs firing on them. Those members of the "Coona(ss) Division" "lit up" their attackers with the ".50's" they had on the humvees they were in.

Yep, learned my lesson.

Holy Cow ! What an experience ! Good info as well. Still waiting on go/no go ...but no mention if FEMA or CDC. Will be on alert for that. I'm a Desert Storm Vet and can smell a Gov't cluster **** a mile away. Will update load info on the super thread if we get dispatched.

Our truck was almost swarmed by the mob of people at the drop site in Houston after Ike hit...the HPD rapidly escorted us and 4 other trucks out of the area to a high school in Channelview.

Things can get out of hand in a heartbeat and you Must always be aware!

We were at College Station, TX for Ike. Rather calm there, other than the storm.

I also know several Red Cross volunteers who quit running disaster service after they were attacked during Andrew in South Florida.

I wonder if there is a mob/victim type "vibe" going on with this storm ? Desperation can make people do bad things to each other.

It's not out of the question. It happens far more than is ever reported. It must be taken into consideration for anyone thinking about taking relief loads. Bad thing can, and do, happen to good people who are just trying to help others. It's sad, but true.

It was a crazy feeling being told by the HPD not to stop until we do!...the patrol car isn't as wide as our truck and people had to get out of the way and they had to do it fast!....sirens and lights galore..I could only hope no one got hurt!....but to be honest!...it was about to get out of hand and the HPD sensed it.

Glad you got out OK. We had no problems, other than storm damage, while in Baton Rouge at the shelter. We were escorted out of town to insure our safety. Both for a safe route free of debris AND steered us clear of certain areas where it was not all that safe to travel.

As for which truck stops are open you might try the websites for T/a Pilot/flying J or try calling the corp offices they might be able to tell you which ones are closed ??? the service plazas I would think would get back online fairly quickly? just looked at the T/a website no information on which sites might be closed seems like some of the major truckstops have emergency generators ???

If your going to Long Island be full of fuel and carry a couple extra cans of fuel. If you get stuck there and can't get out for a couple of days you will need it.

I might ad, both of the major refineries are closed and will be for at least a week. Those two refineries supply Long Island so read between the lines. Good luck.

Layout, does it not surprise you that the government doesn't want to take responsibility for thing they do or say? also thay don't want us to tote but will run when confronted or better yet don't want us to protect our selves when the shooting starts.
