The new-generation diesel engines for the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter
Mercedes now offers its new four cylinder diesel OM651, together with a 6 speed manual transmission especially developed for commercial vehicles, in its Sprinter models. The OM651 replaces the OM646. The six cylinder diesel OM642 was further refined, and like the OM651 now meets Euro 5. The new OM651 is available in three power levels:

*

95 hp and 250 Nm (basic version)
*

129 hp and 305 Nm
*

163 hp and 360 Nm

Together with the new Eco Gear 360, developed for commercial vehicles, and the new Eco Gear 480 for the six cylinder models powered by the OM642, the new Sprinters save between 0.5 to 1.0 liters per 100 kilometers compared to the predecessors.

How long are these sprinters? How long is too long for a "B" unit? How high are they? I have a great need to know this. LOL!!

Very impressive.

If they bring them to the US, I see a new sprinter with manual transmission in my future. That would be so cool.

Hopefully they get cheaper to service OVM, right now in those 250,000 miles, an 2007 and up Sprinter will set you back $3700 just to change the oil and oil/fuel filters. That is with aftermarket parts and extending the fuel filter change 3 times longer than recommended. In that $3700 you haven't touched the transmission yet!

Oil is 7 bucks a quart....since 0w40 has been approved...those figures aren't realistic running....

250,000 miles of running is about 2 years of running....so about spending 1800 a year for PM?

Where are you finding the ESP 0W40? That saves $650 if available.

Below is the constantly updated MB list of 229.51 oils.

Mercedes-Benz Operating Fluids-Extranet

finding as in...the press release update? I read it somewhere and my tech also told me....Turtle or Rlent would know for sure....I thinks there is even a thread somewhere in here about that...

with a gasser you'd have to add the cost of tune-ups plugs/wires that we don't do.....that would be about 1500/2000 bucks over 250000 miles

Finding as in, I want to buy it. I love my Sprinter but the way MB handled the emission requirements left us with a van that needs 13 quarts of this hard to find, expensive 229.51 oil, and an EGR valve that is not suited to the NA marketplace fuel standards.

Plugs and wires on the gasser (with waaay cheaper oil changes) will be cheaper than the diesel oil services.

You can buy the ESP M 5W40 oil online for 7 bucks US a quart plus shipping.

Sorry Ken, not meaning to poop on your daisies. The oil deal with this engine just bugs me. I am working on extending the drains (sampling) but so far, the 229.51 oils don't have the reserve regular CJ-4 oils have (at half the price).

oh you are not poopin on anything...:D

you know us guys are going 50-70,000 on the fuel filters right? they come off clean as a whistle...if you bad up bad fuel it won't matter new or old...

Mobile 0w40 is at any AutoZone....use their reward card and 20$ for every 100 you spend...

AFAIK, Mobil 1 0w40 European Car Formula is not approved for the '07 and later V-6 Sprinters.

Given the higher cost of the Mobil ESP oil (although cheaper at a Benz dealer I believe), this is a truly a case where bypass oil filtration would make sense.

Just doubling the drain interval would reduce the oil change cost to half, probably pay back the cost of the filtration setup in a year or less ..... mebbe as little as six months ..... not to mention that it is the responsible thing to do, from an environmental (and future generations) perspective.

I stand corrected...the latest bulletin from 07 the 0w40 is not on the approved list....my apologies.....

wires for glow plugs?

and oil changes @ 15,000 miles cost about $90.00 bucks,
a gasser at 5,000 miles is $30 x 3 = $90.00....now wheres the savings?

Remove the contaminates with bypass filtration and you should be able to extend the drain interval :D

Rlent.....I gotta be RESPONSIBLE too?!!!?
Nah, ya don't ..... but there could be an upside if ya are .... :D

For the 07 and up, the gasser goes 10 k with an oil like the 0w40 Mobil that you use in your 06 and older diesel. The diesel at 7 bucks a quart is still 91 and then you need the filter.

The big savings stopped in 2007 with the new emission rules. You guys with the 5cyl 06 and older, hang on to em!! Better mileage and cheaper!!!!!

Hopefully, the 2010 BlueTec engines solve these issues.
