Mama duck,
You dont need to take your hazmat test unless you are going to be hauling hazmat, you dont need it to get your class c and you have to get a class c permit before you get your class c license. what are you doing for work now? and what type of license do you hold currently?

Some states (such as Virginia) require for class c that you either have hazmat or 16 passenger bus license, and it is a whole lot easier getting that hazmat than finding a 16 passenger van or larger to use.

HAz-Mat is just a written test, you can take the test until you pass, then it's around $89.00 for finger printing & Back ground check.

Huh? Am I missing something? Does this rambling have anything to do with getting a class C CDL?

Hmmm... Was posted at 2320.

Mamaduck: check the Driver Wanted ads in the EO classified ads, there're usually several for cargo vans. If no luck there, try calling recruiting for the bigger carriers (Panther, TriState, Bolt, etc) and ask whether any fleet owners have an opening in a B unit. :)

Mamaduck,

I'm also looking at getting my CDL soon, (Class B) and I'm looking at getting into expediting. In your first post you said you had taken the written portion of the CDL, but still had to take the HAZMAT written test. In your last post you said you now had your HAZMAT. Did you mean you passed the written HAZMAT portion? It was my understanding that it took quite some time to get fingerprinted and for the security clearance to come back.

Have you taken the driving test yet? If so, where? I'm also from NW Ohio, and trying to get some information on the whole CDL/HAZMAT process.

Jimby: Hazmat endorsements require both the fingerprint/background checks, (check hazprints.com for locations) and a written test. In Ohio, you must have the clearance letter from the background check before you will be allowed to take the written test. The timeframe varies, but I got my letter within 3 wks after being fingerprinted.

If you took it in Ohio, and the hazmat endorsement was added to your license before the background check was complete, either the rules have changed in the year since I renewed my CDL with hazmat, or the clerk at the BMV lied to me when he said I couldn't test without the clearance letter in my hand.

So you need to make 2 trips to the license bureau - one to take the test, and a second to get the license, once you have the clearance, yes?
Not to pick on you, but if you're going to succeed as an expediter, you will have to get in the habit of eliminating unnecessary mileage, and having patience, too. Impatience is the enemy of ALL drivers, but especially expediters - we often have to wait, sometimes for days even, for the next load.
If waiting is a hard thing for you, (and I mean "you" as in all prospective drivers, not just you particularly) then expediting is going to be very, very tough to do.

In Missouri where the Motor Vehicle offices are Political appointments, you can not take the test at MVD. The test is done by State Inspectors. You are allowed to test until you pass. Then you spend the money, in my case it was as I recall $92.00, now I think it's $89.00. I will say the Women at the Local office suggested I get the background first, so I said "what if I am unable to pass the test, do I get my money back"? I had my paper work back in less then two weeks.
