I don't quite know what forum to put this in so I will start here. I found a truck I am thinking about buying. But I am concerned about the fuel milage. The truck is a 2000 FLD112 Freightliner D unit Straight truck,22ft dry box, ISM 330hp Cummins,10 speed auto-shift, single axle, 70 inch condo sleeper, 33,000 GVWR. The owner told me he gets between 9 and 10 mpg. Does this sound about right or is it B.S. and maybe more like 6 or 7.

Thanks
Dan

The ISM is a good engine. If it's geared correctly an average of around 9 isn't unreasonable at all.

We have driven five different class 8 trucks (fleet-owner trucks) in nearly three years of expediting. Fuel mileage on these fleet-owner trucks ranged from 6.5 to 9.5 overall.

The best performer was a dry-box D-unit Freightliner Century Class with tandem drive axles, an Eaton 10-speed auto-shift transmission, a Detroit 500 engine and a rear axle ratio of 3.26.

This truck had no reefer or generator so no fuel was consumed by those devices. Because of the time of year we drove the truck and fair weather, we were able to keep idling to a minimum.

Yes, It's been available for some time now. It was posted in the classifieds looking for a driver, then for sale, and ebay last I saw it. Before i found my truck I highly considsered it, quailty drivetrain, nice sleeper, good shape. For the money I'd say it would be great. I'm just a big fan of KW's after drving 5 diffrent ones, and if I was an FTL fan, I'd have jumped on it.

The best gear ratio would be one that gives about 1350-1400 rpm at the most common/desired cruising speed. You can always shift it down one if you need to go significantly slower than optimum rpm so I'd gear it for close to the highest desired cruising speed probably. For me that would be around 66-68 probably.
