I am taking a hard look at expediting. I'm gathering as much information as I can before considering the plunge.

My background consists of about 25 years experience in different logistical fields, but I have never been a driver other than being a spotter with the big rigs.

I have a close friend that has over 25 years in the trucking business. He has been an O/O most of his career, but hasn't been driving for about 2 years. He has experience mostly in the big rigs, but has also worked in the expediting field for a few years.

From what I have read on this excellent EO site I would most likely consider driving for someone that already has a lease with a carrier.
This will enable me to get the experience I need and see if expeditng is right for me. No need in taking on the responsibilties of being an independent O/O until I get my feet wet.

There are so many questions that I will be asking all you professionals, but I will start with a long range plan question first.

I would eventually want to run a team operation as an O/O. My 1st choice for a team partner is my wife. She is an insulin dependant diabetic who has always shown excellent control of her problem and has a perfect driving record.

Question: Can she be a driver team driver with me or must I go with another person?

My trucker friend couldn't answer this question, other than to say expediting does not require a CDL.

Your response will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Zebra:)

I'M NO EXPERT ON THIS BUT I'LL TELL YOU WHAT THE COMPANY I DRIVE FOR WANTS AS FAR AS A DRIVERS LICENSE, FOR A CARGO VAN THEY REQUIRE A CHAUFFEURS LICENSE AND A STRIAGHT TRUCK DRIVER HAS TO HAVE A CDL WITH HAZMAT ENDORSMENT.

NOT MUCH HELP I KNOW! I'D GO ON ASK THE RECRUITER FORUM AND ASK THE QUESTION AGAIN,YOU'LL BE ABLE TO GET THE STRIAGHT SCOOP THERE FROM THE FOLKS THAT WOULD KNOW!

BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!

Thanks for the info Sharp. I would be going with a cargo van.

Speaking of cargo vans. What unit is considered to be best? I'm thinking extended Savana Diesel.

Thanks,

i would go with a sprinter as you are able to fix it up for this
type of work and still have room to haul freight
sprinter 2500 that i have you are able to haul 3300lbs with other's
it you put in sleeper you cut down your space to haul freight
i run local with egl and hauling 4 pallet's most days
one of other van's is chevy and they can't haul high pallet's
and they have to break things down sometimes to get them in van

Thanks Geo! I'll take a look at the Sprinter. I think one should consider not only the initial cash outlay, but also capacity and longevity.

As I once heard someone say: "If you can't use it, you might as well loose it."
