And now, for a view from the other side: I was divorced in 1980 and the court ordered monthly child support payments for one child in the amount of $50.00. I have no idea what the judge heard [I wasn't there, as he went home to Tx & filed], but I worked a pretty low paying job and couldn't even afford the payments on the car he left [because his license had been revoked for years after multiple DUIs]. When it got repoed, I couldn't get to work - no buses outside central New Orleans.
I managed, somehow, and he continued to pay that $50 every month to the court until the day she turned 18. Never a penny more, but still, I consider myself fortunate. Because he [and his drinking] didn't ruin our lives, and she is now a wife & mom herself, and a nurse, and a terrific person, too. BTW: I encouraged both of them to maintain some kind of relationship, but first he couldn't be bothered, and now, she can't. Life isn't always how we hoped it would be.
Whatever it costs, your kids are worth every cent, and then some.
