Cheer up! A recession is coming and you are going

Cheer up! A recession is coming and you are going to fail, that is if you are not prepared.

Why do I say cheer up? Because you can tell today if you are not prepared, and you can get out now and save yourself a lot of pain when the recession hits. You can also try to get your financial house in order, but if your money is a mess today, there will not be time.

On August 31, top-level economic policy makers attended a symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. I have been reading the full texts of speeches given there. They leave me with no doubt that a recession is coming, and it could be severe.

No one knows when it will come or how severe it will be. My own best guess (and it is nothing more than that, one man's best guess), is the recession will begin in late 2007 or early 2008. To prepare for it, I suggest that you be ready to run your expediting business for six months to a year with 50% of the gross revenue you are earning now. Preparing to do that may be overkill, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

I was especially impressed with Martin Feldstein's comments offered at the symposium.

He said, "The housing sector is now at the root of three distinct but related problems:

"First, a sharp decline in house prices and the related fall in home building that could lead to an economy-wide recession;

"Second, a subprime mortgage problem that has triggered a substantial widening of all credit spreads and the freezing of much of the credit markets;

"And, third, a decline in home equity loans and mortgage refinancing that could cause greater declines in consumer spending."

While the recent panic in the credit and stock markets subsided in response to Federal Reserve action, that action was akin to treating the symptoms and not the underlying cause. It made market movers more comfortable but they are still seriously ill. Some have already died (gone out of business).

There is nothing the Fed or anyone else can do about the cause. Too many people borrowed too much money to buy houses and consumer goods they could not afford; and too many people lent them the money to do it. The only cure for that is to let the speculators, wreckless lenders, misguided investors and irresponsible spenders die on the vine. A governemnt bailout of some will not be comprehensive enough to prevent a recession. Economic cycles are more powerful than the government.

Recessions wring out economic excesses and set the stage for the next expansion. If you are over-extended with debt now, you should prepare for the worst. The economy is going to slow down and so is the freight. In slow times, your truck resale value will decline. If you are already thinking about getting out of the expediting business, I suggest you get now, while the getting is good. Find an optimist to buy your truck and run away while you still can.

If you are thinking about getting into the expediting business, it is OK to jump in if (and this is a huge if), you are prepared to weather an extended period of reduced revenue and slow freight. I suggest that you haul as much freight as you possibly can (minimize home time) while the freight is there to haul. Minimize your spending, eliminate debt, and build your financial reserves to carry you through the slow times.

RE: Cheer up! A recession is coming and you are go

A young man graduated from college in economics and returned home to visit his family. His father ran a very successful local diner and had recently put a billboard advertisement on the highway promoting the diner and the extended hours it was open.

His son said "Poppa! Don't you know there is a recession coming? Hasn't anybody told you that the economy is going downhill and you need to conserve your money. You can't afford a billboard advertising the restaurant!! My God!! Look at the hours you are open! You can't afford to have this small diner working all those hours. You are paying too much overtime to your workers. You are buying too much food and won't have the business to get your money back with this coming recession."

So, the man, on the great advice of his very smart son, canceled his billboard advertisement. People no longer knew about the diner off the beaten track that once had such a fine reputation. Less people came, so the man reduced his staff and decreased his open hours. He purchased less supplies which affected a lot of his local suppliers. Business got worse and worse. Finally, he had to close his diner.

"My son was right. There was a recession coming. I just didn't realize it would put me out of business"

This is the reaction I have to all the doom and gloomers.

Give it a break.

Now there's one for the books! ATeam, a doom and gloomer. :7

Perhaps some more detail will help. Feldstein's statement below is not a prediction about what might happen. He is talking about things that have already happened and are happening right now. You can seek comfort in cute stories and shoot the messenger, or you can prepare for the coming recession. It's your choice.

Feldstein said, "But at a certain point home owners recognized that house prices – really the price of land – wouldn't keep rising and may decline. That fall has now begun, with a 3.4 percent decline in the past 12 months and an estimated 9 percent annual rate of decline in the most recent month for which data are available. The decline in house prices accelerates sales and slows home buying, causing a rise in the inventory of unsold homes and a decision by home builders to slow the rate of construction. Home building has now collapsed, down 20 percent from a year ago, to the lowest level in a decade.

"Ed Leamer explained that such declines in housing construction were a precursor to 8 of the past 10 recessions. Moreover, major falls in home building were followed by a recession in every case except when the Korean and Vietnam wars provided an offsetting stimulus."

Just two days ago, I saw the effects manifesting themselves in Florida. A year or so ago, a development area across the street where friends of ours live used to offer homes built on lots for $260,000 a pop. Now, they are trying to sell them for $180,000 each and having a hard time at that. This is anecdotal evidence to be sure, but putting this together with what the economists are saying, I am listening very carefully to their words.

By the way, these guys and gals are not generally regarded as doom and gloomers either. They are highly successful people who know how to play the money game.

That gets to the point of my post. Having been through several recessions and survived, how did you do so? What did you do different from those that did not survive?

Having several other sources of income is one. The second is not to carry any excessive debt. The Dave Ramsey philosophy. "Cash is King"
would apply here.

And the third was to buy other trucks from failing drivers through finance auctions or contact and reselling them outright, or converting them to flatbed hotshot trucks or tow trucks.

Drivers kept their jobs, but instead of freight hauling, they became shuttle drivers for converted trucks or we hauled oil supplies along the gulf coast with these setups.

As you all know ive been in expedite for a long long time,sure there have been good times,bad times and great times,but all in all,keep a positive attitude,take those loads you wouldnt normally take,you know the short ones,as they all add up,and you will get thru a recession.Sure it nice if your out of debt,in my case its a way of life,if I want it I want it now,so thankyou mr banker,I'll just work another 3 years,or just a little longer,I think if I ever get out of debt,I just wouldn't know what to do,and yes there have been times I was debt free,but my life was really boreing at that time.

I think a recession can be beneficial to the expedite segment of the trucking industry. Companies will be holding even less inventory which could increase the use of our services.

A recession will also weed out some of the marginal expedite companies and owner operators.

This is what i think about it all.If you listen and believe that its coming then it will.If everyone doesnt try and do something about it will happen.People hear talk of this they spend less,invest less in other words tighten the old wallets.That hurts everyone.My question is what did everyone do say in the past year to help the economy?I am just going on with my life like its business as normal.If i want i buy it.
