:mad:We finally got a call at 10:30p.m for a run picking up 212 miles away at 4:00a.m. We were offered $200 empty mile pay, (which we thought was pretty good). The load was going 774 miles and would have gotten us closer to home for Thanksgiving. After drivin all night and arriving early, the shipper had no idea what we were talking about. Turns out they found the cargo, but didn't have the authorization to release it to us. After 2 1/2 hours of sitting at their dock, the load got cancelled. We usually get a flat rate for cancelled loads, plus we were supposed to get detention pay after an hour. When we called the company to find out what our bottom line pay was for the load, they said $200. We asked "what about the cancelled pay?" finally they said it would be about 1/3 our usuall rate. As far as detention pay, we were told we weren't gonna get any because the load was cancelled. By now, we have invested 7 hours of our time and driven over 240 miles. No detention, no cancelled load pay, and are sitting in an area we don't want to be in. What now??? We feel very cheated.

We had a similar thing happen to us. Took a load that was 599 mi going to Canada. We had to deadhead 109 miles, which they only paid us for the 9 miles over the first 100. Fine, the surcharge was good and it was Monday. Arrived at shipper and they were waiting on one of the middlemen to clear the freight. Apparently it had something to do with one of the involved not paying the bill. Anyway, we waited 6 hrs & were expecting detention pay, then the load cancelled and we were given a $99 flat rate and the $4.50 for the extra 9 miles of DH. Got a first out and decided to move ourselves down to an active (and yeah!-empty) board. While enroute, we were given a load that was around 200 miles for the next day. We took it, because we were heading that direction anyway. We wound up our week with 3 small loads (we are a Canadian & Haz-Mat Straight truck team) one of which was a mini (under 100 miles, $99. flat rate). At this rate, we'll starve to death in this business!:(

Hard question to answer. Depends on what specifically your lease says.

Our contract, unfortunately, is between our fleet owner and the company we drive for. That is why we don't quite know what we should do, (if we can do anything).

You know, this situation really sucks.
Two hundred for deadhead pay..
Then you have wait of 2.5 hours..
Then the load ends up cancelling..
The $200 and time was worth the deadhead only if you were also getting the load.
You have to wonder, at which point does it become worth the shipper's while, to find another carrier?
If the charges keep ticking away, due to the shipper's own incompetence, they're deeper and deeper into paying out for this shipment.
Why pay all the charges if it turns out to be more cost effective to just hire a different carrier and start from scratch?
To be fair in this particular situation with you guys being drivers for an OO leased on with a carrier, in my mind, you're entitled to whatever they could get out of the shipper. You spent the time and the fuel. Just sucks all around for each of the parties involved.
