Talking with a driver and the subject of welding came up he said DOT requires one to use a certified welder when welding anything to truck frame.

A certified welder affixes a triangle plate over weld to verify it was done properly.

Is this factual information?

Well I'm a certitied welder, and have been for 20 plus years. If you put a triangle plate (gusset) over the weld no one could inspect the weld. The gusset is added to provide more strength to the weld joint. So Fiction.

You really don't want to weld to the frame if at all possible - it destroys the heat treating. You also don't want to drill into the top or bottom flange - but it is OK to drill the side for bolts.

Always wondered abouting drilling holes.. channel, but not flanges.......got it.
