Hello all,
Question on cdl's? I have a class A with hazmat, looking to drive a van or straight truck that is auto. With a straight truck will I need the air-brake endorsment? I'm out of MO. Thanks for all the help.

If you have a Class A you already have Air brakes. Air brakes is only an add-on for a class b. Class A adds air brakes and articulated trucks so your more than able to drive a straight truck.

Are you sure about that info ? I know many hotshotters have CDL A's because they register their GCVW of a 1 ton pickup and gooseneck trailer over 26,000 lbs . I'm sure I've read they did not have the air brake endorsemment

Well when I took my class A you had to pass air brakes to even get my permit not taking it wasn't a choice. May be some states would let you have a class a with a air brake restriction. But I would think it was stated on ur licesne.

It's no big deal to get a air brake endorsement. You need to study the info the night before and take the test. You say you have a CDL A without a air brakes endorsement. What type of vehicle did you take your test in? While at it get a Haz/Mat endorsement also.

In Illinois when taking the tests for a class B, they have a seperate segment test for air brakes. If you pass it with 80% or better and pass the general knowledge section, then you receive an unrestricted class B. If you cannot pass the air brake segment, you still get a class B....but you also receive an "air brake restriction", meaning you can operate ANY GVWR non-articulated commercial vehicle that DOESN'T have air brakes.
