CDL logbooks and Medical card for vehicles over 10,001# GVW

Can anyone tell me the number of the bill going through Congress that will require a medical card and keeping logbooks for vehicles over 10,001#? Will this also be required by landscapers, farmers, etc. that drive on highways and have pickup trucks that are over 10,001# GVW?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's not a new bill. Interstate trucking currently requires log books AND medical card for every vehicle 10,001 gvw and up.

Farmers are the only exempt group, landscapers and such need to follow their state laws, here is it simple, anything over 10k pulling a 10k gvw trailer requires a cdl and medical card. the chances of lawn jockeys getting nailed for it are slim to non-existent unless they are in a serious accident.

What are you getting at specifically? You used words like "Landscapers-Farmers". Are you running a Landscaping Business using 1 ton trucks to pull your equipment around town? Are you involved in agriculture in any way? Too vague of a question to be correctly answered.

But, if you fall under the more specifics I mentioned above, simple answer is No. FMSCA regulates "Interstate Commerce", and unless you're running a Gypsy Traveling Lawn Service mowing yards all over the country, then don't worry about it.

Here in Texas you're allowed to run 90 "aerial" miles from your home base in anything under 26K with no Logbook, HOS rules, or Medical Card at all. I think this applies in other states too.

Farmers have always been Exempt also. (the traveling Farm Teams that go and Harvest Crops from state to state during the Fall) But, I heard New Mexico has cracked down on that in some fashion. Will other states follow? Who knows.....

Landscaping expediters are all the rage right now.

Everyone...

Thanks for all the replies and information. I found out some of the information on our State's website. I knew about the interstate commerce, but there has been a lot of activity interstate about this requirement. We have a vehicle called the Terramax that we are selling. It is rated at 12,500#. I am the commercial account manager with a Ford dealer in Ohio and we have several vehicles on hand.

That was a little more specific, and a bit of spamming too I see.

So, what you're really getting at is will you need all the goobly stuff other truckers need when you deliver these Terramax Trucks you're selling.

Answer.....Yes. Since the truck is over 10K, you will need to log and you will need a Med Card. A CDL will not be necessary.

But, you'll also need to apply for your own Authority and obtain all necessary insurance required to "deliver" those trucks across country. (No, your dealerships blanket liability insurance policy will not suffice FMSCA when applying for your Authority)

Best Bet, find a good freight broker or a transport broker and have them handle all your delivery needs. You're not going to save any more money contracting that stuff out VS trying to do it on your own.

Good Luck.....

I went and looked to see this Terramax creature. Saw none on their site. Didn't know Ford had a truck by that name. I know Oshkosh Defense makes an unmanned truck called the Terramax.

Looks like nothing more that a desperate drive-by.

There is a Terramax truck out there put out by OshKosh that is used for agriculture purposes. Just Google "Terramax" and it comes right up. It's not uncommon for Dealerships in smaller communities to be selling vehicles other than what their Franchise is labelled to carry. (I used to deliver brand new GN Horse Trailers to a Ford Dealership in Sparta Tennessee that also had brand new boats sitting on their lot too)

We all might know what he was talking about if Turtle didn't mistakenly deem his one post as "advertising".

I wouldn't say Turtle made a mistake. You see the post. Then he went on to pitch how they have several of these as well as other commercial trucks available at our lot, then left a link. It was nothing more than a sales pitch, masked as a question on DOT regs.

Ahhh......OK.

Didn't know it was long drawn out post that was "advertising". Thought Turtle just took a link out that showed what this Terramax was.

TerraMax – Technology - The Braun

The truck was designed for the Military, and did compete in several tests as an unmanned vehicle, but now OshKosh is going to start marketing this thing for both Construction and Agriculture use.

I think he may be referring to the terramax van (the ford version of the Ultramax). Ultramax is an advertiser here. The ultramax and the terramax are actually built by Turtletop in competition with the Cargomaxx.

Here is the Turtletop link to the terra and the ultra: UltraMax / TerraMax

The link was a blatant ad for his dealership in NE Ohio. Thanks for making an uninformed assumption, tho.

We all might not get sucked into the spam if we noticed the first question was about 'a bill going through Congress' to require something that's been required for many years already, and the second was on an issue not even remotely related to expediting, eh?
Slow & steady wins when reading, too.
