CDL License

If you have a CDL license issued in one state and move to another state while the CDL license is still valid. Do you have to get a CDL from the state you moved to? Or can you wait until it expires and then get it issued from the state you moved to. WHEW!!! that was a mouth full.
Thanks
Dan:)

Short answer, its still valid. Though it can create problems if you switch jobs as ussally they want the CDL from your home state. It will also prevent you from getting your canada cards if you dont have them yet. Lastly, if there is an issue with the card the state is going to send the info to the old address. I kept my license in AZ when I moved back to MN, as MN only issues paper licsenses which are usless. But the DMV in AZ lost my health card so they sent a notice, being that I never got it they suspeneded it then eventully revoked it. I didn't find out for 2 months, luckly I didn't get pulled over. Gave them a call and it was resolved within mins.

Unless there is an aberration somewhere you have 30 days to change your license to your new home state. After that you are illegal. The same applies to your license plates on your vehicles.

Will they just issue a new license to me or do I have to take the written test and the driving test again. My driving record is clean so there is no problem there. Also will I have to take the hazmat and tank tests again or will they just issue me the endorsements because they are on my existing license.

Thank You All So Much:7

You'll have to ask the DMV for your state about those things. I don't know if there's a federal requirement or if it's up to each state to set their own rules. I really don't know for sure as I've never moved out of Texas.

oHIo, for example, gives you 30 days to get a new CDL (or a regular operator's license for that matter) and new vehicle plates when you move here. I think (but call the local BMV to be sure) that you go through the same hoops when moving to a new state as you would for a regular renewal.

Also, don't forget to call your insurance agent and advise him/her of the move.

Dan I think you will have to take all the test over for your new state,But since you have a clean CDL with no tickets you will not have to take another driving test,Just all the written test...I am pretty sure I'm right...

What would happen if you kept a mailbox in the previous state and had your mail then sent to your new address? When we moved from Kansas where we had just renewed our licenses to Missouri we got our new license and had to take the test and pay all of the fees once again. That can get expensive.

don't forget if you want to transfer your Hazmat you MUST get your prints done agian for $100. I don't think you have to take any tests agian as a test in 1 state is the same in all states the only expcetion is your hazmat test.

o/o till i die

I Have A house in FL and IL I took my written in IL and they wanted you to make an appointment to take the drive and that would mean waiting 2 weeks. So after the written they gave me a learners permit
and I took that to FL showed it to them and they let me drive that day and gave me a FL cdl without having to take written over again.

I thought a cdl was supposed to be nation wide and if you get it in one state I cant understand why another would want you to take another test.If you have a valid cdl you should be able to just hand it to them and get another.

I may be wrong but it worked for me.

Same as KW except FL and TN as far as homes.
I currently license equipment in TN just because it is cheaper.
If you can provide a residence, I would say your good to go.
