I don’t know the law in Kentucky, but up here in Pa. Yes you can rent a truck to take a CDL test, and yes you can also test for air brake endorsement. The truck you test in would have to be equipped with airbrakes and you will have to answer the questions right to pass. If you go to one of you driver testing places, or the state police, they will supply the literature you need to study for the test. You can also go to the Kentucky DOT web site to obtain the info needed.

To my knowledge, you would not be able to take your cdl-b test with a rental truck (IE:Ryder or Budget) I am a former employee or Ryder and the biggest truck they offered is a 24 foot box truck with hydraulic brakes. You do not need a cdl to rent these trucks so therefore I do not see how you would be able to take the cdl test with this truck. When I took my CDL test in Ohio I was told to point out 5 key parts of the air brake system (Slack adjusters, brake chambers ETC ETC) on the truck. Then again the place I took my test at had a truck there I could have used if I did not have a truck to use. You may be able to find a rental company that does rent trucks with air brakes, however I do not know the names of any of them.

When I got my CDL permit packet, many moons ago, I received a list of Testing facilities from the DMV, as well as places where I could rent a truck. There was then a couple local companies who trained their own dump truck drivers, etc, and they would allow you to rent their truck, and use their training area. They did not provide an instructor or anything. I learned by a friend of mine being very patient, and reading the CDL Book over and over. Driving down the road is the easy part. One of the best things I had going, was my friend, who let me study his truck and I spent hours in a closed department store parking lot, practicing backing into their dock. I got so familiar with his truck, that he ended up hiring me to drive it.. my first expediting experience, 1993, Roberts Express, D1115, a cabover extended cab Mitsubishi, which a lot of people drove back then. Now it's rare to see a cabover straight truck.

You might check your local Department of Motor Vehicles, to see if they have such a list availible. Also, a truck driving school in Columbus, Roadmaster, is one of the testing facilities. They also had a Straight Truck with Airbrakes availible to rent. You would still need a licensed driver to go with you to be allowed to take the truck on the road. Could get pretty expensive, but if you could learn the basics of handling a truck by using a U-Haul or something, then in a short while you could transfer that, and learn the specifics of an air-brake system.

I'm sure Kentucky has something similar, first place to start would be you local DMV, or call truck driving schools.

Yes you can rent a truck to take your test with. You must have your permit with you and a class b lisence holder with you when you go to rent the truck and take your test. Be sure the truck has air brakes if you plan on getting the air brake endorsement. I also live in Ky. and just went with a friend of mine when he took his test. You do not have to take any course as long as you can pass the written and driving test on your own. Its not that hard, just do your home work.
