Carrying a Grill

We are thinking about getting one of those very small propane grills that use the little canisters of propane. A small grill will fit in our precious 2 feet of space in the back but is it safe to have a canister of propane there? We could keep the little canister in the sleeper but it would still be a part of the truck so what are your thoughts on this? I'd love to be able to cook steak or hamburger out on the little grill on the liftgate during a layover somewhere.

We carry an old Hibachi and lump charcoal.

This equipment is certainly not meant to be used if you expect to get through the meal preparation quickly; however, we enjoy the extra time this method forces us to allocate and the taste of food cooked on it.

It does take at least an hour from the time the lump charcoal gets fired up to the time we can start cooking.

We used a Q-grill with the small propane canisters. It actually worked real well. As for the liftgate, we got more use out of using it for cooking and a porch than anything else.

Dave,

I went to purchase the grill you suggested last year and they quit making them! I was so disappointed that I never did buy anything. I think India has a good idea as we where always worried about the charcoal being to hot if we needed to leave quickly. The lift gate is a perfect place for a grill and to lay out all your food. We carry an inexpensive table cloth that works well on the lift gate.

Our lift gate has more then paid for itself so this is just an added bonus on what it can be used for!

We have a Forman grill in our truck that we us regularly. But we are in the process of trying to figure out away to grill other ways. Cause everyone know there is no better way to eat a steak then off a grill.

Well, we bought a grill! I can hardly wait to use it. I found one at WalMart that has legs that fold up and the top is attached and folds open so it makes it very compact. I think this is something we will really enjoy on weekends when we are in a layover status. Thanks for the advice! india

In the winter I always used the catayltic heaters that work off a chemical reaction and are designed to be used in tents and Rv's etc. They utilize propane cylinders and I have never had a problem with the DOT over carrying a couple outside in the tool box. As far as I know it's legal to carry the small cylinders.

RichM isn't illegal to carry propane tanks in any size on or in a commercial vehicle? You see signs on tunnels that prohibit them.Just wondering,Have a great day everyone.

India, let us know how the grill works for you. I am very interested in the clean up of the grill. I bet you also get to meet lots of people when the grill gets pulled out!!

If you carry a grill I guess you would have to carry a shotgun to get meat out on the road. Would you then have to have a hunting license for all the states you run? I think it would be too much paperwork to carry a grill.:+

Seems to me that no one has addressed your most important question---"Is it safe to carry a propane cylinder"?
Heres a question for you---Have you blown up any tunnels lately?
I suggest you pay attention to the tunnel warning signs.
Heres what I used to do---Wrap a steak in aluminum foil--rais your hood and place steak on exhaust manifold--at speeds between 60 and 70mph and considering most trucks exhaust manifold temoerature---your steak should be medium rare within 45 minutes to 1 hour!
