Cargo vans scaling in Michigan

I was told the sticker is required for intra-state moves, not just delivering.

Also, for any vehicle registered in Mich. I know a D-unit guy that got a ticket at the I-75 scale for not having it.

Sorry about the edit comment. You were not edited, I hit the edit tab instead of reply tab by mistake.

We've been told by our carrier that the sticker was for intra-state MI only and not needed otherwise for out state registrations. The same holds true for MO where MO registered vehicles need a sticker for intra-stae moves as well.

MPSC Decals are required of all commercial vehicles plated in Michigan, or commercial vehicles plated in other states that operate under the carrier's Michigan Intra-state Authority (doing "intra-Michigan moves).

MPSC Decals are good for a calendar year, cost $100, but are pro-rated to $50 after July 1 of each year.

Fines are pretty hefty to both the owner operator and the carrier if caught without an MPSC decal doing "intra" moves. Years ago, while Safety Director at another company, I had a driver get a fine @ $165 if I recall correctly and we, the carrier, were fined @ $325. Bottom line - it was a chunk of change.

Thanks,

Sorry I didn't write my comments well, actually didn't think it out when I was writing them.

I know, I know it is for Intra-state but some think it is for everyone. I am told different things about it and it does not matter to me because I have no choice, got to get a sticker. I asked the question to 5 different people and most said what I wrote. I never got a stright answer for 'if I do not deliver in the state do I need one' question.

What I am driving at is this; when you talk to anyone who is supposed to know in this state, you always get differeing 'opinions' and it is great to have a lot of people ask the same question. The sad thing is on the enforcement end people get ticketed for things because they are either told to enforce it or don't really understand it and cover themselves - it should not happen.

The sticker is for carriers operation in intra state service, this would not apply to canadian carriers, like myself, as we cannot move any freight between two point within the US, however carriers providing service between two points in MI do need to have it.

Thank you all very much for the excelent info, it certaintly helped pointing me in the right direction.

Somehow, it just doesn't seem fair that government entities can change the laws, not publicize the changes, and then collect money from individual drivers who were not aware of the revised law. And every state can do it - making it pretty near impossible to be law abiding. People who post of their experiences with "new" laws are doing a service for us all, & I appreciate it.

Just had nice chat with officer in Georgia. She said that if truck/ van has DOT # on it, you had better go through the scale house.

**FYI N.B. scale house I 85 will be open in about a week, they have just gotten done with equipment testing!!

We've been out of a truck recently so I can't talk about Qualcomm messages. I can tell you that at the FedEx CC contractor orientation we recently attended, a woman from the safety department said Michigan requires vans to cross scales and told the one van driver in the room to do so. She then went on to talk about telephone conversations she has had with Michigan officials about this. It's real. B-units must cross scales in Michigan.
