cargo van paid per mile or % of the load? your choice

Well lets see...to be profitable in this business, you 1st have to know what "your" cost per mile is....so to determine your profit per mile you need to know what your pay per mile is going to be, no matter which plan you are on...so if dispatch calls with a load offer of 72% of what the load pays, you still need to do a quick job of figuring out what that % figures out to per mile.pay ...

Now that being said, the pay that carrier offers will differ from one carrier to the next...and even when you are contracted under one program or the other, dispatch will quote you both ways...

Personally, I work under the % of load with my current carrier, and i prefer that because i have a "base" % and it only goes up from there..It isnt fixed and changes from load to load....but never below the base...but then there is nothing "standard" or "common" about my carrier...:)

I would go with a flat rate of $2/mile, but in the real world I would usually prefer a percentage. But there really is so much more to consider. It's like a rubic's cube shell game. Miss one crucial variable, and all the rest doesn't matter.

what would you rather get per mile or % of the load in a cargo van?

Well for me it does not matter I work with three company's, one works percentages the other 2 flat rate, So when they call with a load op I tell them what I need to take the run, then they put there part on & bid! What a great straight way to do biz! What a Concept! DRIVE LESS & MAKE MORE!

Percentage is a lot better when you're booking those short loads that you can get for crazy good money. There's no cutoff where everything under x miles is a mini, etc.

I prefer the percentage. Just the other day I got a 1/2 mile run for about $60. If I got paid mileage on that one I'd have made about 42 cents. For that matter, most of my runs are under 30 miles. Mileage on any of those wouldn't work out to well.

currently being paid per mile, I will take %. $ per mile only is good if and when you get steady runs that are long distance.

there doing that, lost the shirt!!
