never stopped or been stopped because i did not. heard from another vanner who upon approach, the scale officer ran from the building to stop him from crossing the scale. seems the light weight would affect the weigh in program.

this has bee discussed in the genl forum many times. try an advanced search.

In most places vans are not required to scale. However in some the laws do cover vehicles over the 1/2 ton units but most do not stop and the scale guys don't chase. Michigan is one where vans are supposed to scale unless they've changed it recently.

Are there any scale's still open in MI? One nice thing about the bad economy,we can't afford to keep the scale houses open. But DOT is roaming the road's.

I know in Ontario cube trucks registered over 4500 kg GVRW need to enter the scales. But then again I think its any vehicle registered over 4500 kg needs to enter the scale.

Hmm....4500 x 2.2 is only 9900....so you need not scale...

since the rule is 9920

IN Ont, NB, NS, when your GVW is 4500kg and up "9920 lbs" you have to cross the scales and you also have to have a log book have a DOT card and have a daily truck inspection and be a member of a random drug testing consortium. "all the stuff 10,000 up trucks put up with in the states". And if you are independent in Ont. above 4500kg you have to have a CVOR# and that cost 250.00 a year:eek:

Now for wonderful Quebec. Starting 2009/09/01 they are changing what they call a heavy vehicle "commercial vehicle"

You are considered a Heavy Vehicle in Quebec if you net weight is 3300kg "6600 lbs" or more even if your gvw is under 4500kg:mad:
So everyone that goes in to Quebec make sure you check your vehicle registration. That is what they are going to use as your net "empty" weight.

of course vehicles over 4500kg are still called Heavy Vehicles:rolleyes:

You will also need to have your vehicle registered with Quebec "if independent" I do not know the cost but I do know it is yearly.

And in Quebec if you are considered a Heavy Vehicle you will need to log and cross the scales, have DOT card, and daily inspection report and be a member of a random drug testing consortium. "it does not matter what country you are from, US, MEX, CAN"

How can you log in a van ,
if you do not have a DOT approved sleeper ?
you cannot use line 2.

A sleeper isn't a prerequisite for logging, it's just a prerequisite for using line 2, and using line 2 isn't a prerequisite for logging.

I recant..I checked the Ontario site...

Vehicles That Require Inspection

A Daily Vehicle Inspection Is Required To Be Conducted On:

* a single truck that has a registered gross weight or an actual weight over 4,500 kg (9,920 lbs).

But most cargo vans don't even come this heavy cube van yes...

YEP WENT BY THE SCALE, HE WAS SITTING ON THE RAMP PULLED OUT AND GOT ME. I TOLD HIM IT WAS MY FIRST TIME IN CANADA "THIS WAS 7 YEARS AGO" "BUT IT WASN'T" AND I SAID MY CARRIER "PANTHER" TOLD ME THAT THE RULE WAS ANYTHING OVER 10K. HE HAD ME GO BACK AROUND A GO THRU THE SCALES AND WEIGHED ME I ONLY HAD A 200# SKID ON. HE THEN ASKED FOR A WHOLE LIST OF STUFF "EVERYTHING REQUIRED FOR COMMERCIAL VEHICLE" OF COURSE I DID NOT HAVE A LOG BOOK, DAILY INSPECTION, CVOR#. SO I CALLED PANTHER AND HE WAS ON THE PHONE FOR OVER A HOUR.

SO NOW I GUESS YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED RIGHT?? PANTHER SENT A VAN TO RECOVER THE FREIGHT I WAS PUT DOWN 8 HOURS WAS TOLD TO WAIT FOR A ESCORT BACK TO WINDSOR. ESCORT SHOWED UP AT ABOUT THE 14 HOUR MARK GOT ESCORTED BACK TO THE BORDER, AND WAS WARNED THAT NEXT TIME THAT I WILL BE FINED NOT THE CARRIER. I NEVER HEARD ANYTHING FROM PANTHER ABOUT THE FINE AMOUNT BUT THEY DID TELL ME THAT IF I WANT TO GOTO CANADA I WILL NEED TO FOLLOW ALL OF THE RULES AS A BIG TRUCK ALL THE TIME EVEN WHEN JUST RUNNING IN THE STATES:mad: OF COURSE I KNOW I COULD JUST MAKE UP THE PREVIOUS 7 DAYS BEFORE CROSSING AND DO 7 DAILY INSPECTIONS BEFORE I GO, BUT PANTHER INSISTED IF THEY GET ME A CVOR# THEN I MUST FOLLOW THE RULES ALL THE TIME.

SO ABOUT 8 MONTHS AFTER THIS HAPPENED THE CUBE WAS STARTING TO COST TO MUCH SO I GOT RID OF IT AND BOUGHT A REGULAR VAN. AND HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS OUT OF CANADA SINCE:D
