People ask me do I miss NASCAR cannot explaine to them how much more I enjoy doing Expediting.
There are somethings though I would like to see if the rest of you have a problem with. This last Friday I laid over in Durham was just to pooped to drive 2 hours home and since I was the only truck in E. NC thought my chances for a load would be better. Well I woke up with a log in throat, as the day went by Sat felt better. Woke up Sunday with a 102 finally went to the doctor 30 laps left for Gordon so missed nothing upper resporitory infection.
O.K. second time out in three months I have gotten down with something, but when ever I come home I am just exhausted takes at least two days to bounce back.
I am eating well, lots of fruits, veg, etc.. I love working out just for staying in shape, I am not over weight. How do you all feel?
This is the one thing I did not count on, thought I would come home and catch up around the home etc. Yeah Right.

We always took tons of vitamin C and Zinc tabs this time of year and never got sick. Even chaining up several times a day laying in the slush and cold, we kept our health. Since being home and hanging out in my own neighborhood we've been sick several times...go figure. Try the vitamins and wash your hands often. Good luck.

This time of the year I load up with vitamins and use the alcohol hand wash stuff. Truck stops are notorious for spreading colds/flu.

Also when off duty Coors lite seems to have some preventive capabilities..

Diane and I considered ourselves healthy before we started expediting 18 months ago. Your message gave us pause to think about our health since then.

In 18 months, we've gone out of service once due to illness. We spent two or three days (memory fades on the exact number) in a truck stop letting the illness run it's course. Back when we lived in a house and had "real" jobs, we missed work due to illness more often...colds, flu, etc. It seems we're healthier as expediters than we were as white collar professionals.

Not a Doctor here, but it may take your body time to adapt to the environment of the road. Don't give up hope on health. It could be in a few months you'll be fending off the bugs that get you down now.

I've been doing this expediting thing for 3 years now and have not caught the "junk" once YET. Had food poisoning twice though! Transferring loads in a rest area is intreresting. Needless to say most of the food nowdays comes from my truck rather than the truck stops.
So, what's up with the nascar thing? Just a junkie or were you a driver? I am an old Iowa dirt-track dude but the XM radio is on whenever there's a race, afraid it's in the blood.

> Had food poisoning twice though!

Here is a EMS tip for upset stomach/food poisoning...

Get some activated charcoal capsules and take as necessary.

This has "saved" me (and mine) more than once.

The activated charcoal encapsulates most toxins and
prevents serious reactions... ie: "food poisoning".

It will also prevent spicy foods from causing an upset stomach.

I have found these capsules in health food stores and
on vitamin sale websites....

FireGears - wishing you good health and safe driving

Thanks for the info FireGears, will head directly to the store and pick some up, not that I ever hope to get that crap again! I prefer my time off to be more enjoyable.

Something that we don't think about is how different parts of the country have different kinds of germs. Expediters travel to the far reaches and get exposed to almost every possible strain of flu and colds out there - every year. It will take a while for your immune system to build up to some of these bugs, but it will get better. Different virus' are dormant at different times of year based on their climate and location. A 40 degree temperature difference from pickup to delivery is not uncommon. When you get right down to it, expediters drive in and out of "flu season" dozens of times every year. My best suggestion: Vitamin C, Echinacea, and when there is no freight on that truck you need to be asleep, even naps help prevent exhaustion. I know exactly where you are coming from, I hope this helps - Scott

Well Drivers, I know where you are coming from first hand. Just a little over a week ago, I had to back off a load because of Truck stop food. Then a week later, I came in contact with something and I don't know what. That Broke me out in water blisters all over my face,Swelling was painful. Even my Doctor wasn't sure what it was. I have been home since Wend. I will be going back in Service Monday morning. The Meds the Doc gave me, stopped all of the problems. He said it was an allergic reaction to something I came in contact with, It was scary not knowing what was causing it......Butch :) :) :)
