Simple solution...if they don't stop...sink them in International waters!

NAIROBI, Kenya–A Canadian and a U.S. warship pursued Somali pirates for seven hours after they attacked a Norwegian tanker in the Gulf of Aden.

The chase ended when warning shots were fired at the pirates' skiff, NATO spokespeople said Sunday.

Seven pirates attempted to attack the Norwegian-flagged MV Front Ardenne late Saturday but fled after crew took evasive manoeuvres and alerted warships in the area, said Portuguese Lt. Cmdr. Alexandre Santos Fernandes, aboard a warship in the Gulf of Aden, and Cmdr. Chris Davies, of NATO's maritime headquarters in England.

No shots were fired at the tanker.

Davies said the pirates sailed into the path of the Canadian warship HMCS Winnipeg, which was escorting a World Food Program delivery ship through the Gulf of Aden. The American ship USS Halyburton was also in the area and joined the chase.

Both ships deployed helicopters, and naval officers hailed the pirates over loudspeakers and finally fired warning shots to stop them, Fernandes said, but not before the pirates had dumped most of their weapons overboard. NATO forces boarded the skiff, where they found a rocket-propelled grenade, and interrogated, disarmed and released the pirates.

Prime Minister Harper congratulated the crew of HMCS Winnipeg, telling Canadian reporters at the Summit of the Americas in Trinidad "they're doing tremendous work."

Harper noted that Canada has been part of NATO patrols in the Gulf of Aden for some time, in particular helping aid shipments from the World Food Program pass safely through the region.

The NATO official said the pirates cannot be prosecuted under Canadian law because they did not attack Canadian citizens or interests and the crime was not committed on Canadian territory.

"When a ship is part of NATO, the detention of person is a matter for the national authorities," Fernandes said. "It stops being a NATO issue and starts being a national issue."

The pirates' release underscores the difficulties navies have in fighting rampant piracy off the coast of lawless Somalia. Most of the time foreign navies simply disarm and release the pirates they catch due to legal complications and logistical difficulties in transporting pirates and witnesses to court.

Pirates have attacked more than 80 boats this year alone, four times the number assaulted in 2003, according to the Kuala Lumpur-based International Maritime Bureau. They now hold at least 18 ships – including a Belgian tanker seized Saturday with 10 crew aboard – and over 310 crew hostage, according to an Associated Press count.

So long as these various countries abide by the NATO "catch & release" program, there will continue to be a problem with pirates. These pieces of human debris need to be taken off the market one way or another. Turning them into shark chum would be not only the most efficient method of disposal, but also the most effective deterrent for future activities.

I like the "catch and release" of the pirates as long as they release them back into their sinking boats. Just like the Canadian's to do it half way...

So the soviets are now in with the somali pirates and Western Europe is on the verge of being invaded by the Soviets?

Umm there was a US warship there as well...doh....we as in US and Canada has no authority on the high seas...They did not commit a crime on the US or Canada....not much LEGALLY we can do.....And no one wants to open a can of worms by violating the rights of International waters....

Ah Horse Feathers....It was Nato not the "rights" of international water....Open that can of worms, better chance to catch those bottom feeders.

So why were the Canadians chancing them? Oh, I know, they attacked a ship, called for help, got rid of most of their tools of their trade by throwing wapons over the side of their ship...they only stopped when a warning shot was fired by a US helo.
I don't know how far away the US ship was but I do know it was reported that the Canadians got'em, and let them go...

Oh, and yes we do have Authority on ther high seas as mandated by maritime law.

Gee, do the pirates have the "right" under international law to do what they do? Just sink them, no questions act. An attack on a ship is an act of war. Treat is as such. As to the Soviets, they are our "buddies" now, Obama will side with the far left wackos every chance he gets. Layoutshooter

Actually there are no rights as pirates, we have agreements and treaties in place to cover our rights to protect shipping, amazingly.

As for NATO, so the Soviets are invading western Europe to get them involved?

They are called "Freedom of Navigation Treaties" and we DO have a right under those treaties to protect our shipping AND go after these terrorists/pirates what ever you wish to call them. I don't think we will, I still think that Obama is looking for a way to side with them. After all, if they are attacking "capitolist" interests they "Must" be victims of the worlds robber barrons and therefore are really "freedom fighters". Layoutshooter

Wouldn't in the pre-carter days, this would have been solved without our intervention through our 'friendly' relations with some of the neighbors of Somali?

I mean I wouldn't mind if the CIA paid Ethiopia to invade Somali and take the country over. It would solve a lot of problems, like cleaning out Al Queda and the war loads and give the Ethiopians something to do. I think they may also enjoy the operation.

We need to re-establish a military presence in Ethiopia. We had one when I was in the army, 1970-73, I had several friends that were stationed there. It was great duty, you wore civilian clothes there, no uniforms. U.S. soldiers were a "target" there for Soviet operatives and several "terrorist" groups so they stayed low profile when stationed there. We should put in air support for the most part, to provide air cover as Ethiopia goes into the "snake pit" next door. Provide all the arms, supplies and armor that they may need as well. Be prepared with a sort of "Marshel Plan" for the two countries when it is done so we do NOT have a repeat of the mess we have now. Layoutshooter

This how we USED to handle garbage off shore in the Norh Africa area, when we had "stones" as a country. This was a VERY exciting night at work and this one too ended with a rush home, turn on the TV crack open a six pack or two and listen to the news networks mis-report it. The only down side to the incedent was the Goobers in the Fitters got out and were recovered. Layoutshooter

On the morning of the 19th August 1981, two VF-41 Black Aces F-14 Tomcats, Fast Eagle 102 and Fast Eagle 107, were flying combat air patrol to cover aircraft engaged in a missile exercise. An E-2A Hawkeye from VAW-124 gained radar contact with two Sukhoi Su-22 ‘Fitters’ which had left Okba Ben Nafi Air Base near Tripoli.

The two F-14s from VF-41 Black Aces were ordered to intercept the two Libyan fighters. Only a few seconds before the crossing, at an estimated distance of 300 m one of the two Libyans fired an AA-2 “Atoll” at one of the F-14s, which missed. The short range and the inability of AA-2 to engage in frontal engagements seem to indicate that this weapon was accidentally fired. Then the two Sukhois flew right past the Americans and tried to escape. The Tomcats evaded and were cleared to return fire by their orders, which mandated self defense on the initiation of hostile action. The F-14’s turned hard port and came behind the Libyan jets. The American pilots fired AIM-9L Sidewinders, and the first kill is credited to “Fast Eagle 102”, and the second Libyan was downed by “Fast Eagle 107”. Both Libyans ejected safely.

Who is going to know how a ship sunk out in the middle of the ocean if there are no survivors? I say say blow these pirates out of the water, then just say "they may have broke deep and took water"... "F" them. There is no dealing with Somalians. They don't know the difference between right and wrong even a little bit. Spend a couple hours in a Somali neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio and you won't think twice about it....Canadian or otherwise.

I would sink them, have video to prove and make sure that both the pirates and the entire world knew I sank them. It is a much better deterent that way. Besides, it would be far better than most of the other "reality" shows out there today!! Layoutshooter

I would say not to even talk about it, just do it and that's that. No need to get the "international community" involved with this mess.

You did notice that the UN has been very effective, their Civil Rights conference was a shambles because Iran accused Israel of some crimes against humanity.

I say let the UN take care of them or better yet, put the UN on a ship and let them visit the place.
