For those of you who do go to Canada the closing rate to-day was 1.0138
at this rate if you include about a 2 cent service charge 20 bucks Canadian will cost you about 22 U.S. It's been along time since the buck has been equal....or better to the U.S buck.

Its good for the U.S. retailers on border states, more Canucks will cross over and buy in Buffalo and Detroit.

Well Maybe Canada should help us out and devalue their dollar like we did for the Japanese?

It's actually a bit more than that. The U.S. Federal Reserve Bank lowered interest rates today and markets moved in response. At one point today, the U.S. dollar was worth $0.97 Canadian. I'm not sure what it is this moment but the U.S. dollar, already weak, grew weaker in response to lower U.S. rates.

Greg...your comment is exactly what Canadian manufacturers want..a lower Canada buck this is killing them...they buy alot from the U.S and other places and its all traded with U.S currency...I high Can buck is not really beneficial for the majority...The feds are not touching it because the economy is strong 2.8% growth, inflation rate low...BUT it will catch up to them in the long run. They risk hurting the Canada auto industry that is going so gung ho....

I just check the noon rate posted by The Bank of Canada the dollars are even!!! 1.0016 First time in about 15 years or more!!!

Well as of today, the US$ is equal to the Can$ so I wonder if this will help the auto companies who export to both Canada and the US?

OntarioVanMan, there might be an opportunity here.

Bloomberg.com says, "The Canadian dollar has gained almost 19 percent again the U.S. dollar this year, the biggest increase among the 16 major currencies. Canada, the world's eighth-biggest economy, has benefited from rising demand for copper, gold, wheat and oil from neighboring U.S. and emerging economies such as India and China."

A 19% shift in Canadians' favor must have some Canadians salivating for U.S. goods at better prices. It seems to me that two enterprising Canadians, one with a straight truck or van and one with a bus might do OK for themselves; organizing shopping trips with people on the bus and their purchased goods on the truck. Minnesota's Mall of America is not so far away. Only, have fun at customs.

But Phil you forgot to mention that if the Canadian dollar rises against the US dollar too much, the export of Canadian goods to the US and possibly to other countries may be reduced in the next two quarters, putting Canada into another financial problem.

But if we invade Canada, we won't have to worry about it, will we OVM?

The drop in the Ontarios unemployment rate and the increase in the transportation sector must be the result of the "extra" trucks put on hauling Torontos garbage into Michigan.

Really?

Seriously, what I am getting at is if the cost of Canadian good climbs beyond a point, the wholesalers and distributors will raise prices to the retailers and that will give the Canadian manufactures a problem by having a back up of their product in their inventory. Every thing from that thing they call the Caravan to.... what ever else they export except garbage will become more expensive for the US consumer and they want cheap, remember?

This happened with the Pound in the 80's after we devalued our dollar to help Japan - one of the biggest mistakes Reagan ever did.

AND can anyone figure out why we can't stop the garbage from coming here? Is this a treaty, Michigan must accept the garbage or can say NY?

I thought they had a vote on that garbage?? sometime last year when the contract came up for renewal. And then Mi just increased the fee.

Maybe people did vote it down but was subject to your Gov's veto??

You'd have to research that more.

Your right, manufacturing numbers are dropping like a rock! They are hurting. Most companys in Canada are U.S. based anyhow (cept Toyota and Honda)and buy within the company but thier budgets are in US dollars but they have to buy with Can dollars that they earn. Thereby dropping thier bottom line. All the autoparts produced in the US going into Canada now cost more. Hence if it stays this way and it's projected to. They might and prolly will look for Can based suppliers and the US gets hurt again. Its not good for either country.

We don't vote on anything that has to do with that.

The governor and a few others lied before the election when they claimed that they worked out an agreement with the Canadian garbage suppliers to reduce or cease exports in 2010 or 2011 but that turned out to be a lie.

It is the supreme court that rules that we don't have the right to stop the garbage imports, congress does which restricts what we can do and pretty much puts a stop to the states rights clause and the 10th amendment. This leaves it up to our useless senators and representatives who have done nothing for the state to begin with and but the actual fault is with the really stupid people of the state who keep voting for these people to begin with - they don't realize that the state is becoming a dumping ground and it is in the backyard of people who buy new houses but that is for another thread.

OH just a civics lesson for you OVM, you know that the congress and the president has the power to tell the supreme court and other federal courts what cases that they can take?

As I understand it, Michigan wanted to quit taking garbage from Canada and other states, but they were told that that would interfere with interstate commerce (waste is an article of interstate commerce, and it is Congress that regulates interstate commerce), so they had to keep on taking it. Too funny. I do know that there is a lot of garbage from as far away as Florida that goes to Michigan. Only PA and VA import more garbage.

Ah, Michigan. A place where tossing a sandwich wrapper out of the window will cost you $500, but you can dump it in a landfill by the truckload for just $.21 per ton.

A Canadian garbage truck crosses the border into Michigan every 2 1/2 minutes. Man, that's a lot of garbage.

19% of all the garbage in Michigan's landfills is from Toronto. Whew whee, that's a lot of garbage.

From Canada and other states, Michigan imports garbage at a rate of about 12 tons per minute. OMG, that's a lot of garbage.

It's amusing to those not from Michigan, but for those who are, you need to see this. The infamous Trash-O-Meter.
