I was just wondering how safe is Canada in the Winter? Do they maintain there roads as well as the Lower 48.

Depends. Generally, if you can handle driving in Michigan or New York - Canada is pretty easy.

If you are going to a remote region - you want to take some precautions and have Winter Road Kit in the truck like this one.

Disclaimer: Watch out for Moose and bears.....and polar bears. LOL!

If you can handle driving the poorly maintained p.o.s. roads in Michigan, even the Northwest Territories will be a piece of cake.

401 is notorious for their whiteouts between London and Toronto. 402, pretty much the whole thing is bad for them.
