OK Now I know alot of this may sound stupid but they say the only stupid questions are the ones not asked.
I will be retiring soon from my present job ( I operate a train ) and am intrested in getting back into trucking. Many years ago I drove for a friend of mine at a moving company ( unverifiable ) and then drove local in NYC metro area. What I would like to do is expidite. I would like to run primarily from NYC metro down to Georgia where my children and grandchildren are. I would also like to occasionaly go other places but when I do not want to work I do not want to have to!!
Money will not be a problem because I will have a pension and I will have my own finances I think I would like to go with a van but am willing to go as high as a regular rig but would rather stay small. I work now for a major brueaucracy and definatly want to avoid that at all costs. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Leppy, there really isnt any such thing as dedicated runs in the expediting industry, so for you to go back and forth from nyc to georgia to visit your relatives, would be unlikely. You may get the occasional run from point a to b, but not on the consistent basis that i think you are looking for. As for finances and availability, as long as you own the vehicle, and dont have to answer to someone, you can take 1 load a month if thats what you choose. It seems to me it might be cheaper for you just to visit them in your personal vehicle a few times a month than to go through possible headaches in this industry. I just hate to see you waste your time sitting in a truck stop, when you could be seeing your grandchildren. Good Luck in whatever you choose

Leppy,
Your best bet to fit those parameters you state is to talk to the companies in NYC and on LI, and try finding one that has recurring shipments to the Georgia are, and try working out an arrangement to cover those shipments. Once you get in GA, try doing the same thing there so your return trip is paid.

This option would require you to get your own DOT number, insurance, and any permits, drug screening programs, bonding, etc. as needed. You wouldn't exactly be an expeditor, but you would be working how you want to work.

Thanx for the input zangfu. I am not really looking for a dedicated run per say. Only to be able to go back and forth to that area and not being forced to take trips I do not want. I also want to run the whole country but on my terms if thats possible

Thanx Vernon
I really appreciate the input. I dont know where to find those specific companys tho. Maybe I better just sign on with a regular trucking co. But I do not want to run when I do not want to and I know companys can get very picky with that kinda stuff

Leppy,
Easy answer but a little harder in the doing. Everytime you get in an area where one or more companies are located, go in and ask the shipping clerk if they send any freight to GA area. If they say yes, you have a conversation.
I know it can be done that way because my son did it while living on LI, although he was open on his destinations. Work out from where you live in a circle as there are an awful lot of businesses up there. Luck to you.

OK I do appreciate all the feedback but I think now I will start looking for a flatbed dedicated run from the north to the south. I think that will be alot easier. Thank you all so much for your help

Leppy, when you decide to go into expediting, usually you do run on your terms anyway, since it is your truck. The only thing you really have to consider is: "Do I really want to deadhead 2000 miles to go home? Is it worth it to take a load across the country say from new york to california and then be stuck in california where it is hard to get out of sometimes and end up deadheading all the way home because i have that doctors appointment or something else?" As I said it is usually on your terms but there are factors you have to consider otherwise you are wasting your time. I am new to expediting myself and am also younger than most anyone in the expediting business so maybe I can help give you a different perspective on it. Any other qustions let me know:D
