explain what has happened to the freight? This past year has been the pits....and the past 6 weeks a nightmare.

This is supposed to be the busy time of the year, but yet the boards are loaded, units sitting for 2 and 3 days. Hot freight areas are moving slow and the off areas not moving at all.

Anyone have a clue?

Can we hear from some of the companies we are leased to....someone?
Anyone???? :-(

Thanks,
JJ

You would be lucky to get a company to respond to you, and if you did I would think hard about the answer you get. There in business to make money just like we are. The pecking order is profit first to them, then the shipper, then some where way down on the list is the O/O/drivers. If we can't make it that's OK there will be others to take our place when we fold. The trouble with the Expediting companies is when our type of freight slows down they tighten there belt, lay off some people and sit on there hands knowing that it will get better again without any reguards for us out here.

Gosh, it hasn't been all that bad for us. We seldom sit more than 12 hours without a load. We generally return home after unloading and have another load within hours.

I was wondering the same thing until I got a D unit and there was my answer. I started hauling 2 b loads at a whack. Double loading b loads at two pickup points and delivering to a single customer. All this double pickup is being done at 29 dollars for a second stopoff on seperate bol,s.Meanwhile the cargo vans are sitting idle. The company is doing a double dip but paying the trucks for a stopoff at the rate of 29 dollars. Their is probably a law against this but dig deaper and see if you can prove it. THATS THE HARD PART.

Hi JJ,
I know you are looking for the answer to that $64000 question, just as all or most of the other van drivers are. I would love to see someone from one of the bigger companies answer that. Especially why they keep putting more and more van on than they have freight for.

I can tell you that I have gotten busier but not overwhelmed with extra freight. I can also tell you that I have been getting a lot more calls from customers shopping around for a better rate, and a guarantee of on time delivery. I don't do any on demand freight, unless one of my dedicated route customers needs it. I can also tell you that the customers shipping freight are trimming fat and consolidating more. I can also tell you that I know of some companies that are putting their freight together and shipping as one to the same receiver or consignee. Sort of what Lureveto said about picking up from 2 and dropping at 1. I don't know about all that other stuff he was talking about, but I do know that sort of thing has been going on for years. We call it piggy backing and most of the time a Company will get a substantial discount when this is done. In most cases the company will pay full rate to the longest POD and if the 2nd drop is in that same zip - area, they will pay a small drop fee. If it is in another zip - area they will pay the miles to that zip and a small drop fee. No matter what! That company is saving his/her money, and this is completely legal.
