California - Fire Extinguisher Inside - Sign

For many years we have been told we must have this sign on the door where the fire extinguisher is located while in California.

I have been trying to find the California regulation stating this and I am having no luck. Has anyone actually seen the regulation in writing and can refer me to this page?

I know we have to carry a properly rated fire extinguisher, the fire extinguisher must be secured, and we must be able to get to the fire extinguisher.

My understanding is that if it's by the driver's seat, no decal needed. Do you see them on LTL day cabs ?

If not in sight of the driver, it's location would need to be identified by signage.

I've never heard of any such regulation. If it existed, the carriers would have told drivers and it would be common knowledge, would it not? It would be an easy violation for CA scale cops to spot and cite. I woud think that if the reg existed, word would be out to put the decal on.

Diane! Diane! The truck is on fire! Run out side quick and read the sign so we can know where the fire extinguisher is!

A truck hauler buddy forgot which bunk compartment he put his fire ext in his new truck.
An inspector wrote him, saying it was obvious that he hadn't done a proper pretrip that morning.

And the inspector was right.

California does write this up on inspections for not having the signs and not having the signs on the right door. One of the Team Run Smart Pro's that is from California during an inspection was asked to show that the sign was located on the correct door.

A friend or yours Phil as well as ours told us about this rule many years ago and I believe he knew what he was talking about.

I believe the signs are for first responders as I assume they believe as drivers we know where our fire extinguishers are located.

I was inspected twice in Ca this year.
No sign. Not asked.
If I see a regulation, I'll comply.

I would think if you have a sign, you should prove it's on the correct door.

If improperly labeled it could cause an unnecessary delay.

I guarantee you, if there is a reg that Fedex Frt, UPS, and Ruan trucks would have the signs.

The team that I am talking about was sited at the Gilroy Scale.

That Team that got the violation could have it removed if there isn't a specific regulation...did the Officer reference the reg in the violation?

We received a violation for a different issue in the state of Washington, Fedex determined the violation was incorrect, challenged it and won. The violation has never shown up on my DMV report.

I would hope your friend will look further into this matter. Please advise us of any updates.

I would say under the drivers seat near the door is about a conspicuous as you can get. Open the door and you are staring at it.

I would think the signs would be required for the drop and hook folks that jump in and out of different trucks all day long.
Any first responder coming to your cookout is propely bring his own with him. Unless a fire ext is a explosive device under heat then I would think they want to know where they are.

The new trucks do not have a place beside the drivers seat for fire extinguishers. Also I worry about a California DOT officer and their interpretation of a conspicuous place they might be thinking frame rails of the truck.

We will keep our sign on our truck.
