I just aquired 2 200ah gel cell 12 v batteries deep cycle (over 400.00 each if new),only a year old, take outs from a bank computer apu system, for free free free!, added a solinoid switch, tied it to my starting batteries, and ran a wire from the alternator 14 volt post to trip the solinoid when the truck is running, it charges the batteries, and disconnects them from the starting system batteries, when I shut off the tuck, so the battteries run an inverter, and I can have power for all my toys, so far longest i've run the batterys has ben 36 hrs without needing a charge, runniing my laptop, a small lcd tv/dvd combo, and a 200 watt electric blanki! So far, so good. It also helps to have a good stong output alternator, mine is 160 amps.

Do they really male APU's for cargo vans?

Not in the true sense..thats what i tried to point out in post #3above..I guess you could call a "generator" a APU, since it is a "Aux" power source...but it really isn't even close to being a APU....

and APU in the true sense in this industry (trucking) is considered a self contained unit normally diesel powered with a HVAC unit along with a generator..most newer models also are CARB compiliant so they can meet anti idling laws...
