"The United States had gone to war declaring it must destroy an active weapons of mass destruction program. Instead, American troops gradually found and ultimately suffered from the remnants of long-abandoned programs, built in close collaboration with the West."

The weapons found were old stockpiles that had been manufactured prior to the first Gulf War.

These weapons were decades old and badly deteriorating presenting more of a threat to anyone handling them than to anyone they might have been aimed at. As our troops found out the hard way.

Cheney kept saying the smoking gun would be a mushroom cloud. I wonder what kind of mushrooms Cheney was tripping on.

As for the people you know and what they might have told you I have no clue what they might have seen nor their qualifications for evaluating it.
The point still remains there was NO active program to develop WMD. That was Bush's rational for going to war.

Not only did bush believe they had a wmd program so did most leading politicians in both major parties. The belief had been going on fore years even before bush was elected.

Don't misinterpret and think I thought invading was a good idea but many people attempt to argue the wmd position beginning with false beliefs.

Before we actually started the 2nd Gulf War I read multiple newspaper articles that quoted CIA sources that insisted there was no WMD program in Iraq.
These articles also said Cheney had to shop around to get analysts to support his views.
The politicians were too scared of being branded un-American to take a stand against Cheney.
Please keep in mind that the resolution Congress passed authorized Bush to go to war ONLY if all other options failed. UN inspectors were preparing to go back to Iraq. That wasn't good enough for the Bush administration (Lord Cheney).
As they say, the rest is history.

you da burn straight on that. But if some witch would have done their job vice wearing a skirt and worring about the yellow stain on their blouse there would no have been no dUM gulf war. No desert shield no storm and sadam would still be where he should have been and the bs that going on over now with the stinking issis which a new name for the taliban anyway wouldnt be. But we cant change history. All we can do is go forward. So to combat the issis / taliban we need an all out assult and do them in. Peroid. I believe it was either General Sherman or Stonewall Jackson who said that the only way to bring a war to a quick end is with as much brutality and bloodshed as man can muster.
I might have it slightly misquoted but the point in there.

First thing we need to do is anyone with a camera should be labled an enemy combatant and taken out.
Then as General Sherman proved kill every enemy combatant that draws a breath, and destroy the enemies infrastructure, and military capabilities, in their path then maybe we wont have to revisit these mud holes.
