Brakes on e-350

I need to change the drum pads on my van, a Ford e-350. I was looking at the parts guide & there are are two types of pad sizes for the drums....

w/ 12.00 x 3.00 Brakes; Rear

w/ 12.13 x 3.50 Brakes; Riveted; Rear

Any idea what size is the correct size for my van? I would prefer not to take the pads off & than take them to the auto parts store to match them up.

it probably is a "production date" thing...different pads after a certain date in the production cycle..get the date off the drivers door tag and call the parts house..it also maybe a difference of rear axle type..a "Semi floating axle" or a "full floating axle" make sure which you have and let the parts guy know that also...

It is most likely a single or dual rear wheel option. You'll know when you pull the drum. One will have glued on linings the other rivited.

You might be able to narrow it down by gvw otherwise the suggestion to buy both and return the wrong ones is best.

Replace the hardware while your in there. And if its a floating axle nows a good time to do the seals.

He didnt want to get into it before he had the parts......measuring them or reading off the drum would require at a minimum removing the tire before getting the parts.....

How about just getting under the truck and measuring the width of the drum?

Chances are the ford dealer will tell him what brakes he has, I think even Napa can tell you that.

OH deville, did you look at the axle code?

That's a quick way to see what axle it is and with that, you can get the shoes.

By the way, all my DRW cubes were 3.5 width shoes with rivets.

This may or may not matter. Drum brakes don't have "Pads" they have "shoes" parts manager may be looking in the wrong place.

Man I havn't changed shoes in at least 15 years. I think the last time I did a set was on 88' Jeep Wrangler. Should be fun. Hopefully i'll come across a Ford dealer on my travels this week. I will let everyone know how I make out.

Sooooo, as it turns out I did not need brakes at all. the E-brake spring broke off & was ratteling around in the drum & was getting jamed between the drum & the shoe, so the brakes weren't grabbing on one side. Adjusted the rear brakes & it stops like a champ again.

I had to replace both front & rear shocks, the rears were a b***h. I could not get the top nut to break. I don't have toorch & I wasn't able to get a decent angle to cut them out. So I will bring it to a muffler shop & have them do it for me.

The Front shocks was another PIA. The welded mount that the lower part of the shock is atached to broke off. So off to Home Depot I went with shock in hand to purchase a 9/16 bolt, nut & washers, a 7/16 & a 9/16 drill bit & tapped out a hole to thread a bolt though.

Took about an hour & a half & it was done. New front tires & wheel alignment later this week.
