Box truck question...

Do all box trucks require CDL? Because, I've been told that the 10-12' box trucks that are not duallies are usually under 10,000 gvwr and don't require a CDL. This is hard for me to believe because the payload of the box truck would be extremely low considering the hefty weight of the truck, right?

If the truck is under 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight then a cdl is not required but otr trips in a vehicle over 10,000 pounds gvw require the driver to maintain a log book.

Many Ryder and Penske rental trucks are registered at 25,999 pounds. Then they can be rented to individuals without a cdl.

It seems like all expediting companies require a CDL for box trucks, why is that?

I think you'll find that most companies require (or at least strongly suggest) having haz mat which requires a CDL. Also it makes it a lot easier to require a CDL for the fleet than to make exceptions.

There is also a truck just under 26,000 lbs. may have a shipper "accidently" understate the weight of the load causing the truck to be over 26.000 on the scales . With no IFTA and no CDL this would be a serious , expensive problem .

So the way I understand it, If I have a box truck I have to go on the scales for weigh-ins, no matter what kind of load I have, unlike a cargo van, correct? Please correct me if I'm wrong.
