The more people refusing cheap freightwill allow supply & demand to do it's work.

The only way that supply and demand will do it's work in the short term is at least half of you vanners sell your vehicles and go do something else. This "just say no" business won't do a thing.

When I called the federal DOT in Va they told me I had to have the DOT number and athority (sp) to haul any freight

yea you have to have it but you dont have to have it displayed on the side of your van. I got my authority in 2006, called the feds to see if I would have a new carrier check performed on me and they said no. I was informed that thy only reason for the authority was to make sure I maintained the proper insurance. If you drop your insurance the feds are notified and your authority is cancelled. This authority is 10,000# and under, $300,000 primary and at least $5,000 cargo. I run $50,000 cargo.

As for finding loads I deal directly with shippers and I set my own rates. Nothing hard about it at all, just knock on doors and sell your service.

I just regestered my trk in FL. and updated my DOT number-as of September 2011 the ''REGESTRANT ONLY'' will no longer be recoginized-and you can no longer apply as a registrant. we will all have to register as a carrier-look up the PRISM program. next time you do your by annual update you'll have to change it.

Yep...Rates are governed by supply and demand and the needs of the client base, not the wants of the contractors.

Except next year, there will be a newbatch of laid off plumber, elictrician, contractor with a sparecargo van looking tomake a quick buck with their idle van.

In the long run, we are all better off if we can educaate those and convince them they can earn higher rates with the same equipment.

The more people refusing cheap freightwill allow supply & demand to do it's work.

There will always be a surplus of vans, better to educate the industry instead of watching them fail.

Since you claim a surplus of vans? U want to educate them? My gawd man....I want to rid this biz of the surplus..not have them hang on....let them go. just let the, go....

"Drive less...Make more..." is a wonderful sentiment. I would rather run for .90 CPM then sit and wait days on end for $1.10.
IF you have a one ton ext Cargo van & it's paid for. You ought to be in good shape @ $.90 CPM.
IF your carrier gets you 1500 paid miles per week, 21 days a month $4,050.00.
Break it down into thirds which seems to be the norm around here. That's $1,350.00 expenses. Leaving $2,700.00 divide by three you get $900.00 a week. Personaly taking half of that for future reapirs I think is extreme. For me that's good money for driving around our wonderful Country.
It's been said on here dozens of times one person's cheap freight is someone else's money maker.

Bill..I don't think most will not split the hair that fine...like the difference between .90 to $1.10...It is those loads that are being offered at .50 to .65 level...
I wouldn't balk at .90 nor maybe even .80 DEPENDING on destination...as always.:one person's cheap freight is someone else's money maker

The problem, of course, is the people those vans are sold to will use them to enter expediting. :D

There are only three ways to make good money in a cargo van. Here they are!

1. Go to work for Landstar.

2. Go to work for Load 1

3. Start your own company and get your own freight!

Love Bottom Feeders! There are those in this industry booking
.75-.90 cpm loads on your trucks to "move" your trucks! Keep on, when you go belly up, more loads at our rate for us! As they fall by the wayside, they will no longer be able to get the bottom feeders!

The problem, of course, is the people those vans are sold to will use them to enter expediting. :D

Well, we seem to have gotten “off point” from the OP and since we have I’ll be the soul who plays the devil’s advocate regarding the ever verbally abused CV……. Plus ending the post back where it should be – talking about “bottom feeders”.

If Sprinters or Straight Trucks had a smaller price tag, we’d then see less CV’s.

The economy is/has been brutal for the last few years and so many have lost their original means of living. Who can blame a guy/gal who utilizes a tool (CV) by busting into a biz to feed themselves and/or their family ??? I mean really, CV’ers decided on doing the honorable thing by actually working rather than “using the system”.

We all know know, like and respect several CV’ers. We have solo’s, teams and fleet owners ........so who qualifies as a “friend” or “foe”?? I’d venture to say some of the senior CV members got into expediting “back in the day” for the same reasons as todays newbies !!

In wrapping this post up, if we are to point fingers, it should toward 2 parties (same as politics):
1) Some larger and medium companies (not all) who demand a truck at every corner of the US while knowing they are putting the CV owner at risk of not getting enough miles to remain in business.
2) The “bottom feeders” who feed off everyone else’s freight boards in order to bid freight cheaply in order to make a few bucks at the expense of some starving S/T, Sprinters and CV’s.

Ultimately, in this economy the larger, medium expediters as well as the “bottom feeders” are trying to make a living (in some way, shape or form). Although many do not care, let's face it - they do put people to work in any vehicle. Thus, the answer is a question …..vicious cycle isn’t it ???? Again, just like politics.

I got into a sprinter (cv) because I don't want to drive a big truck anymore after 20+ years and over 2 million miles. Now I work when I want and go home whn I want.
