Canada Border Crossing Rant

I've been crossing into Canada just since January of this year. Just go into Ontario from Detroit. Most weeks cross at least once, but have done 4 times in a week. And (knock on wood)have never been sent to customs for inspection or ask about my guns at home. But if ask that I would look the officer in the eyes and say I have no firearms to declare of this truck, and that would be all he would get from me on that subject.

No you don't.... then the asking country can or has the option to deny entry...it is their right....

Sorry dude but the thing is that the contents of my home is outside the jurisdiction of the Canadian authorities, even if I live next door to their embassy. They have to follow the same treaty as we do and that means that until I am actually permitted to pass, their questions are limited to that of that the treaty has defined and for the sole purpose of my crossing into Canada. Once I am in Canada as a visitor with approval, they have to go through the US consulate to obtain that information and that has to follow the laws of the US which means a warrant has to be issued.

The only worry I have is with CCWs and the registration of that information to all law enforcement country wide, they have that information as they also have access to criminal records if they want to.

Hey layout, I heard Dundee is asking to be declared a disaster area for the 53 houses and four businesses that got flooded. That's really p*ssing a lot of people off up here with over 1000 homes flooded and about 14 businesses out of business because of our flood - and we ain't on no river. What makes them special? Cabellas?

And my guns are in MY home in MY country, NOT on my truck. Canada is becoming more and more hostile. We see here on the border all the time. Our own government does nothing to protect us. Our OWN government has no business asking me that question, let alone the government of another country.

look what our government lets in all the time over the southern borders.they cant even see whats under their noses.look what we got running our country also.

Why are you asking me? I am not in county or state government. I have not been elected to anything.

I also am not concerned that people "up there" are upset. I am upset that I am paying so much of my wages to bail out that cesspool called Detroit. Talk about a waste of tax dollars.

I already have and I have not ever had an issue at the border. I've been asked and I say no and that's it. No prodding, no repeating the question, nothing.

If I hesitate in answering, then it is a flag. If I sit and say "I refuse to answer" then it is a flag, but one quick "Nope I don't" sometimes followed with a "I don't believe in guns" brings an end to it.

The thing is I am not legally obligated to answer that question because it is not in my possession at the time the question is asked and the purpose for the question is beyond the need to enter into the country, look up the treaties and see what was agreed upon.

That is the best way to handle it....and the last part....Most of border people on either side of the border don't know the treaty...

I've seen many an argument because someone answered the citizenship question with North American...

But they do know the treaty and know exactly what they can ask and not ask.

Wasn't there a serious complaint against a Canadian Border officer a few years back about asking personal questions to a lady in order to find out about her and her 'status'. I think the investigation came down to the questions were not in-line with the treaty and the need to know to make the determination for entry so the officer was penalized and the person was apologized to. I have to find the article but it was clear that they can't delve into specifics of your past or property without a real reason, asking what someone has at home is not within the realm of their need to know.

The best one I saw was a guy claiming to be from Mars and told the officer that his ship will be there soon to pick him up so he needs to cross now. He was screaming at the officer, who I felt sorry for because she didn't seem to know what to think about the guy from mars. I was behind this guy and because they pulled him out of the car and inspected everything right there at the booth, I had to sit there and wait for 20 minutes before they told me to move.

Most of my problems happened in the summer season when they have the students on...The Fort Erie crossing is loaded with students...

We have not had a problem in quite a while. It is kinda hard to lie about firearms since I have a CCW and that fact shows up on my CDL. If they check my CDL they will find that out.

The speed of a Canada goose, dependent on sub-species is between 40 and 55MPH. That is true whether that goose was born in Canada or in other countries.

With no possible way to verify the truthfulness of one's reply to the question [guns at home in US], I'd say they're just running an attitude check. Be polite, even if you're lying, no problems.

How about when U.S customs ask's you 6 times if you have any weapons on board. In Champlain, NY. I have been asked that many times between the booth and X-ray and inspection. That's right my last crossing last week empty back into the states was a Triple banger. Quick inspection at booth, then off to X-ray then to the inspection area. I felt so lucky  , and yes was asked a 1/2 dozen times if I had any weapons on-board.

Then Friday a.m. rolling down I-87 south they had the Border patrol set up just north of Lake George Village. Odd to be set-up there, we must of been on a raised alert or something. Only got asked two questions, Citizenship and what do you have in there. Told them U.S. and a ventilator for a hospital and they are waiting on it!! Told to get a mov'in!!!!!!

I think the last two weeks they were looking for something, I had the same thing happen to me but I have heard from one of the drivers at the place I do my weekend work that they spot checked every third truck last week.

Crossing early this morning was ask the standard question about alcohol, tobacco or any firearms, then the lady wanted to know if I had a tazer or mace. First time got that one.

Never been asked about a tazer, we have been asked about mace.

The last 3 times we went into Canada we have not been asked ANY questions at all. They have not even said one word. They take our papers, stamp them, and hand them back. Off we go. Strange.

That is how Fort Erie is most of the time, not a peep from the agent. Seems like the smaller crossing's they seem to ask more questions like Stanstead, QC. and Woodstock, NB. and a few other small ones that do not have a lot of commercial traffic.
