Sorry..Haven't really kept up on the issues....

Well let me help. The moron who the Liberal party chose to be their leader failed his party so miserably that the party had their worst showing since confederation. The other guy is NDP (democrat), and because of the failings of the Liberal's choice of leader, now have their largest federal victory ever. The Quebec party barely exists any more.
<pjjjjj> loves Mr. Harper :) Yay, now he can concentrate on running the country without putting up with their shenanigans for the next 4 years!
Funny how things can turn around to bite one in the rump, eh?

also Canadians are famous for punishing the other parties who voted for the non confidence when one wasn't necessary...from my little bit of reading he wasn't doing that bad a job to call for the vote...

Yes, hence the turning-around-to-bite-one-in-the-rump part. The (lib) party is barely alive now.
