Clinton was just better at hiding it. He had the press behind him, as does King Putz the 1st does. They covered for him. A LOT! Clinton was one EVIL dude. Murdering son of a bean picker that he was.
Yes, but then Bush came along and stood on Clinton's shoulders, as it were. I don't think Bush would have been so horrible had Clinton not prepared the way. I mean, Clinton opened some eyes as to just how much Americans would tolerate ("Oh, we can assault some religious cult in Texas and then get away with incinerating them, including women and children, having prevented local fire and rescue from doing anything to save them, and then just whitewash the whole thing?" ) and then Bush picked up the ball and ran with it, going even farther. I mean, Clinton probably never envisioned the abuses Bush started. He was probably thinking, "Now why didn't I think of that? If I'd have just had the technology a few years ago and a cabal of neocons behind me dreaming this up, plus a terrorist attack...Man, Bush has all the luck!" So Clinton was a pioneer of sorts and Bush was the new-and-improved tyrant.
So, all you Paul detractors, where do we go from here? In the Bible, there's an account of a king dying and his son taking the throne. The elder was a hard man, and the people hoped his son would chill a little.
1 Kings 12:4-11 NASB
"Your father made our yoke hard; now therefore lighten the hard service of your father and his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you." Then he said to them, "Depart for three days, then return to me." So the people departed.
King Rehoboam consulted with the elders who had served his father Solomon while he was still alive, saying, "How do you counsel me to answer this people?"
Then they spoke to him, saying, "If you will be a servant to this people today, and will serve them and grant them their petition, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever." But he forsook the counsel of the elders which they had given him, and consulted with the young men who grew up with him and served him.
So he said to them, "What counsel do you give that we may answer this people who have spoken to me, saying, 'Lighten the yoke which your father put on us'?" The young men who grew up with him spoke to him, saying, "Thus you shall say to this people who spoke to you, saying, 'Your father made our yoke heavy, now you make it lighter for us!' But you shall speak to them, 'My little finger is thicker than my father's loins! Whereas my father loaded you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.'"
In the words of columnist Vin Suprynowicz, "There's a great decade ahead for America. Unfortunately, this next one isn't it."
Every candidate minus one moves in the direction of Rehoboam. Interesting choice, huh?
