Bench Coach

The other day I saw in the newspaper that the Atlanta braves fired Pat Morales who had been their bench coach for 5 years.

Today I called a local sports program on the radio and asked"What does a Bench Coach do". The Sports announcer along with many other callers had no idea. So does anyone know what a bench coach duties are,seems like a pretty good gig.

The bench coach takes over the duties of the manager if the manager is ejected from the game. Because of MLB rules on the number of coaches, the same person may hold more than one of these positions.

So when a manager gets tossed,which happens about 2 times a year some other overpaid,overweight, washed up guy gets to make a decision. Not too shabby if you can get it.
While on the same subject I have always wondered why a bullpen coach is needed. The manager calls the Bullpen and says start So and So warming up. Then the bullpen coach calls back and says he is ready.Seems like any 12 year old could do that.
